MARCH 13th Report

To be eligible to compete you must 1) be a U.S. citizen with a valid U.S. passport (begin application process now; it takes six weeks and is good for 10 years); 2) be born in 1996 or 1997; and 3) have met two qualifying standards. To qualify for the World Youth Championships, marks must be made between October 1, 2012 and June 26. To qualify for the U.S. Trials marks must be made between June 18, 2012 and June 17, 2013.  The standards for both meets are listed below with each event.

Fourth in a Series (through March 13) Compiled by Mike Kennedy (e-mail mkentrk@aol.com )

ELISE CRANNY AND ARlANA WASHINGTON NEW BALANCE STARS

Junior Elise Cranny of Niwot (Co.) came into the New Balance national indoor championships with a best of just 5:03.62 for 1,600 meters and no indoor races but that did not stop her from going with Hannah Meier of Grosse Point South (Gross Point Farms, Mi.) in the elite mile. Meier led through 800 meters, passed in 2:21.5, before Cranny took over just passed 1,500 and went on to win in 4:40.62 to rank No. 5 on the all time high school indoor list. She passed 1,500 at 4:23.65 to rank No. 5.

Cranny was not the only Youth distance runner who turned in an outstanding performance in the Armory. In the two-mile Audrey Belf of Seaholm (Bloomington Hills, Mi.) remained in contact with one-two finishers Wesley Frazier of Ravenscroft (Raleigh, N.C.) and Julie McConville of Higham (Ma.) before finishing third in 10:22.48 to break the national high school sophomore record of  10:25.07 set by Sara Bei of Montgomery (Santa Rosa, Ca.) in 1999. Caroline Alcorta of West (Springfield, Va.) was just behind in 10:23.77. Both are eligible for the World Youth championships. Sophomore Maddy Berkson of Classical (Providence, R.I.) took a high quality 800 field through 400 in 58.5 and then held on to finish third in 2:06.67 to move to No. 9 on the all-time high school list. Senior Sabrina Southerland of Benjamin Cardozo (Oakland Gardens, N.Y.) won in 2:03.59 to make her the second fastest high school of all time.

In a match up of two of the best 200 meter runners in the nation, junior Ariana Washington of Poly (Long Beach. Ca.) led for 190 meters before being passed by senior Kali Davis-White of Boyd Anderson (Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.), 23.48 to 23.50. Washington’s time ranks as the second best indoor Youth time in the world this year behind the Irene Ekelund of Sweden, who has run 23.15. It is beginning of the season it looked like Olivia Baker of Columbia (Maplewood, N.J.) might be leaning to the 400 and after finishing second in the 400 in 53.99 that seemed like a real possibility. Baker’s time leads all Youth runner indoors.

Junior Dior Hall of Washington (Denver, Co.) and senior Sasha Wallace of Castro Valley (Ca.), the No. 2 and 3 60-meter high school hurdles of all-time, met for the second time in three weeks with  Wallace prevailing for the second time—winning in 8.17 to move to equal second, with Hall, on the all-time prep list. Hall struggled after being beat out of the blocks by Wallace and finished seventh in 8.71.

High jumpers excelled. Cyre Virgo of Fleetwood (Pa.) backed up her 5-10 state meet win with another win this time with a national-leading 5-11¼. Alexa Harmon-Thomas of Lawrence (Ks.). who earlier had a nation-leading 5-10 ¼ to win at Simplot improved that with a 5-10½ in the pentathlon. Shay Petty of St. Mary’s Hall (San Antonio, Tx.) improved her best to 13-4 ½ in finishing second in the pole vault. Both Cidae’a Woods of Winslow (Atco, N.J.) continued her consistency with a 19-6 in the long jump for fourth—just two inches off her personal best. Keturah Orji of Mount Olive (Flanders, N.J.) won the triple jump with a nation-leading 41-00.25.

The boys’ Youth athletes were not as prominent as girls at the Armory with the 60 hurdles being their best event. Marlon Humphrey of Hoover (Al.) was second at 7.76 and Isaiah Moore of Cummings (Burlington, N.C.) was third at 7.87. Sophomore Joe Klecker of Hopkins (Mn.) was a real surprise in the first section of the two-mile where he finished third in 9:17.23 passing 3,000 in 8:39.45 to better the IAAF qualifying standard. Richard Rose of Boys & Girls (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was fourth in the “stacked” heat of the 400 with a personal best of 48.32. Devon Willis of Schalmont (N.Y.) triple jumped 47-3 ¾ and Benjamin Bonhurst of Smithtown West (Smithtown, N.Y.) put the shot 59-1¼--both personal best.

Outdoor action has been limited to a southern tier of states led by Texas, Florida and California but the weather has generally been cool and windy. The best marks have come in the field events. Sophomore Kaitlyn Merritt of Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, Ca.), the national freshman record holder at 13-3, has cleared 13-1 and Greta Wagner of Los Gatos (Ca.), whose best in 2012 was just 11-6, has gone 12-9.  In all 17 athletes have bettered the IAAF standard of 12-1½ and six have better 12-7½, which it took to qualify for World Youth championship finals based on an average of the last two championships.

The shot put has seen a fair amount of action. Junior Adriana Brown of Lawrence Central (Indianapolis, In.) was just a 37-10 thrower in 2012 but using the ability that had her throwing the discus 147-8, she has improved to 48-8 ½ indoors to lead the nation. Haley Teel of Gregory-Portland (Portland, Tx.) has improved to 47-6 outdoors and Nia Britt of Aleman (Mission Hills, Ca.) has thrown 48-0 indoors and 47-6 outdoors. Ashlie Blake of Liberty (Henderson, Nv.) led the nations Youth throws at 52-1 in 2012 and opened up the outdoor season at 48-6. The mark came in a dual meet so cannot be used at a qualifier for the World Youth championships.

Sophomore Paul Lucas of Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, Az.) opened up at the Aztec Invitational with bests of 11.68 and 21.47. Both races were run into a 1.1 mps wind. Kendall Sheffield of Marshall (Missouri City, Tx.) is the 110 high hurdle leaders at 14.32. There have been a large number of marks that would  have bettered the IAAF qualifying standard but no wind readings were taken in those meets. This is an on-going problem and coaches need to make an effort to see that their athletes compete where wind gauges are in use and the readings are recorded on the results.

U.S. Trials Qualifying Information

The United States is the six-time defending World Youth team champion. The first two finishers in each event at the U.S. Trials meet in Edwardsville (Il.), provided they have meet the IAAF World Youth championship qualifying standard, will be placed in a pool and the team will be selected from that pool. The 2011 U.S. World Youth team was made up of 41 athletes, at this time the exact number has not been set but it could be between 45 and 55, which was the size of the 2009 team.

The general guideline that has been used in selecting the team has been a demonstrated ability to advance to the finals of the World Youth Championships. Those standards are much higher than the entry standards set by the IAAF. It should be noted that the events where athletes have met just the IAAF standards but have not been named to the previous teams, are the events where the U.S. is in greatest need of developing its athletes. Let’s hope that the USATF will be able find a way to send all qualified athletes to all world championships. These athletes are at an age (16-17) where they are making a decision whether to continue with track and field or gravitate to other sports. It makes a difference.

With a full season of competition to come, the U.S. has 26 girls and 25 boys, with a limit of two per event, that have achieved performances in 2012 that would place them in the finals of previous World Youth championships. However, they will need to repeat those performances between October 1, 2012 and June 26, 2013 and place in the first two at the U.S. Trials.  It is very difficult to speculate on the progress of athletes at this age, especially the boys, but it is very possible that as many as 55 athletes, with a limit of two per event, will achieve performance that would place them in finals. There were about 50 athletes that finished in the top two at the 2011 U.S. that had shown the ability to reach the WYC finals.  The IAAF provides funds for 20 athletes with U.S.A. Track and Field funding the remainder of the team.

Perhaps the most important thing that athletes can do is to be sure to have a U.S. passport valid through 2013. You must have a passport with you when you participate in the U.S. World Youth trials. You will not be able to get a passport at the U.S. trials. Be sure to allow at least six weeks from the time that you apply for a passport until it is sent to you. You can apply for a passport through the Post Office. Getting a passport is a long-term investment. It is good for 10 years and there is every reason to believe that athletes with the talent to qualify for the World Youth Championships will have need of a passport in the next 10 years.

A special note concerning the following events: 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 2000-meter steeplechase. All athletes must have a mark in these specific events to that meet the IAAF standards for entry into the World Youth Championships. You can not substitute 1,600, mile, 3,200 or two-mile times to meet the IAAF standards. You can use times in those events to qualify for the U.S. World Youth Championships Trials in Edwardsville (Il.). In the 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles plus the long jump and the triple jump, qualifying marks must be accompanied by wind readings of 2.0 meters per second or less. It should be noted that the hurdle heights at the U.S. Trials will be the regular high school heights while the height at the WYC will be three inches shorter in the boys 110 and 400 hurdles and three inches shorter in the girls 100 hurdles. For the first time marks made at the U.S. Trials can be used to qualify for the World Youth Championships.
