The 2004 Coaches Classic was held at Spring Valley High School in Columbia on March 27. Spring Valley is hosting the 2004 state championships, along with the Taco Bell Classic in April. Excitement was brought to the track and field portions of the meet as several performances gained national exposure along with several marks moving up in the South Carolina standings.
It is with much regret that I must announce that Dinwiddie High School will not be hosting the Southern Track Classic this year. This was a difficult decision to make but one that was made in the best interest of the competitors, other meet participants, and the reputation of this track meet.
There were meet records from all over PA - Drexel Hill, Mechanicsburg, Philly - plus a big one from a Florida transfer, at the 20th PA Track Classic at Plymouth-Whitemarsh. Upper Darby senior Jannea Bridgeford is gaining confidence (along with records and wins) as she cruises through her senior season. Bridgeford was named the track athlete of the meet with two win, a meet record 24.34 in the 200 and an 11.87 in the 100. Shawn Smith came into the Philly area and ran away with two wins and a second. His 10.99 and 22.30 were good enough for the 100 and 200 win, and he cleared 20-10 for 2nd in the Long Jump.

Coming off a strong indoor season for the Manchester girls' sprint relay teams, which saw their 4x200 meter relay squad take state runner-up honors with a time of 1:42.87, the Lady Lancers wasted no time in establishing the supremacy of their relay teams in this young outdoor season. At the Manchester Relays, held at Manchester High School's very own outdoor track facility, the Lady Lancers set two impressive meet records.

The WPIAL (District 7), is the equivalent of District 1 in eastern PA. It is made up of the counties surrounding the area\'s major city. Firechief has been posting on PennTrackXC for some time, and in 2003 did a WPIAL preview that was pretty close to accurate. The success encouraged him to take another swing at it this year. With his permission, we give you the 2004 WPIAL preview. Any email to him will be sent through PennTrackXC.com. And of course, feel free to post on our forum. We\'re sure he\'ll be happy to respond there.
Cardinal O'Hara, fresh off their #7 all-time DMR and PA #1 4x800, will attempt the same double in the same day at Saturday's Pennsylvania Track Classic. North Penn is their top competiton in the 4x800. Cumberland Valley and North Penn are seeded near the top in the DMR. But that's not the only hot event, as Perkiomen Valley loads the DMR against OHara, Wyomissing, and a Frances Koons-anchored Allentown Central Catholic in the DMR. Central's Michael Wray will run both the 110 and 300 Hurdles. Teammate Michael Syrnick is the top seed in the 800, with nine guys under 2. He'll also run the 1600. Jessica Kratzer of Greenwood is the top seed in the Shot Put and Discus, and the 2nd seed in the Javelin. Krista Simkins will help her Wissahickon teammates in relays only. The fireworks start at 10am with the DMRs. If you're anywhere near Philly, stop by.

We have completed our coverage of the NSIC and NIC meets with a few photo pages, plus quotes from athletes. The action pix pages include some great NIC shots from Pat Montferrat of mySportsShot.com, plus PA athletes at NSIC, including photo essays on the #2 all-time, junior class record 52.19 by Nicole Leach, and the #7 all-time DMR by Cardinal O\'Hara.
A photo story of the #2 all-time 400 by West Catholic\'s Nicole Leach, whose 52.19 broke the PA record by an astonishing 1.95 seconds. Nicole also set a new PA record in the 200 in the prelims with a 23.91.
A photo story of the Cardinal O\'Hara #7 all-time DMR of 10:10.80, which was good for 3rd at NSIC. It\'s also a US Catholic record.
Nike has announced its sponsorship of a new national high school team cross-country championship to be held December 4 in the Portland, Oregon area. The Nike Team Nationals is a post-season invitational involving 20 boys teams and 20 girls teams, with more than 300 runners from all parts of the country. The races will be 5,000 meters and the specific racecourse will be determined shortly. More details in the news release, and on Dyestat.
For the sixth straight year, the two 'national' meets were held the same weekend on the East coast. And as is their custom, Dyestat runs comparisons to satisfy the fans of each meet and the sport. This year, NSIC wins on the number of Dyestat Elite performances. But when the meet is scored as a dual meet, it's NIC. Read the story and make the comparisons. Then let's all go outdoors.

Alex Miletich of Tallahassee Chiles currently leads the state with a time of 9:23.65 for 3200m, and he says he owes it all to his coach.
Nicole Leach broke the PA State Record in the 400 by 1.95 seconds. While you\'re contemplating the significance of that, it was also the 2nd best 400 of all-time. 52.19 says it all. Leach also took 3rd in the 200 in 24.10. Her 23.91 in the Prelims set a new PA record. And Cardinal O\'Hara ran 10:10.80 in the DMR, which got 3rd at the meet, but was the 7th best all-time. 7:53.74 would get you a win in most 4x800\'s. It got O\'Hara 4th. Other PA highlights included Mycaiah Clemons of Valley getting 3rd in the 60 Hurdles in 8.71 seconds. Amy Kelly ran a strategic race through the first 3/4\'s, and then simply went for it all, forcing the pace and running out of steam over the final lap. She finished 6th in 4:55.16.
The concepts of tempo runs will be explored from coaching theory after which LouisianaRunning.com\'s Will Steele will offer some practical tips about the nuts and bolts of the how and when to use tempo runs to improve your running.

Friday is the relaxing day at the NSIC meet. Not the wall-to-wall finals of Sunday. Boy, was that assumption wrong this year. TWO National Records on day one. A surprise visit from Bay Shore to push Mountain View to one of those records. And an even bigger surprise, with the appearance of one X-Man from Florida - one Xavier Carter - to set the tone for a Saturday and Sunday that could lead to even more records.

This indoor track and field season which is rapidly drawing to a close, has already seen plenty of exciting invitational, district championship and regional championship meets and the usual bevy of outstanding individual and relay performances in numerous events. It's now time to cap it off with one of the top season ending meets on the East Coast, the Virginia AAA Track and Field Championships.
West Catholic\'s Nicole Leach will stay in New York to compete the entire weekend of nationals, according to a statement she made to Dyestat Monday evening. On Saturday, PennTrackXC reported that Leach would attempt to compete in both New York and Baltimore on the same day, Saturday, March 13th. The attempt, with the 400 Trials at 4:40 at the National Scholastic Indoor Champs, and the other, the SMR at 7:45 at the Nike Indoor Classic, would have been difficult, at best. Leach is ranked #2 in the US behind Natasha Hastings, while the West Catholic SMR is ranked #1. West Catholic was hoping to go after the US SMR record. But Leach says she is focused on the 400. Leach told DyeStat last evening, \"My plans as of now are to be in New York the entire weekend, and they will most likely stay that way. I feel as though I need to be in New York to get the best results in the 400. Whether I do the 200 is undecided. We\'ll have to go after that (SMR) record another time.\" And she has the best wishes of her West Catholic coach, Lenny Jordan. Jordan told PennTrackXC Monday night that Leach is not even entered in the NIC race. \"She\'s doing what she has to do, and we wish her nothing but the best.\"
