Summer Training Blog: Springville's Grant Gardner (Week 3)

Week 2

Monday 8/6/18

Did a double today because I'm a little tired. Just did a six and a three. Nothing too crazy. The six-miler was in like 100-degree heat to get used to it. Also lifted pretty hard today.

Total miles: 9

Tuesday 8/7/18

Ran the Hobbler today. It's a three-mile stretch of the canyon by my house that is a hard uphill workout. I went 16:43 which is super good. I ran like a minute faster than last time, and over 30 seconds faster than my best ever. I can tell I'm getting in pretty good shape. The run was in the afternoon so it was probably just under 100 degrees outside, so I'm extremely happy with the effort. Everything starts to fatigue super fast when it's that hot, and some of the hills are super tough, so it's a good fitness builder. The outside of my calf hurt a bit but I'm getting on top of it with rolling and massage and the works.

Total miles: 9

Wednesday 8/8/18

Just a nice recovery run. Started slow and then sped up into it. Had a few sub-six but I was in lots of control. It was super hot again today, I had to stop for a water break around seven miles in. I'm super hydrated and getting used to the heat for sure, so those runs are getting easier.

Total miles: 9

Thursday 8/9/18

Did another double today. Ran three in the morning and it was super smokey, so I decided to stop there. I then went to practice in the afternoon and ran on a treadmill inside for six miles. Haven't really done too much treadmill running, but I actually enjoyed just putting my headphones in and working up a sweat. Will work more of that in this next week if the smoke stays.

Total miles: 9

Friday 8/10/18

The air is sooooo terrible today I didn't even consider running in Springville. I could barely see the mountains because of the smoke. A few teammates and I went up to Deer Creek to run... but it was terrible there too, so we drove all the way to park city and ran at Jeremy ranch. The air was definitely better there, and we got some good soft surface running.

Total miles: 9

Saturday 8/11/18

Woke up at 5:30 AM to go up to Jeremy ranch again today for a long run. It was legitimately cold the first mile, but I got warmed up eventually and started cruising with Brandon and coach Rex. Brandon and I have trained together for a while so it was nice to get back together for a run with him. The way out on Jeremy ranch is all slightly downhill, so that means the way back is all uphill. It becomes a grind right as you turn around until about mile 14 when we cool down. But I always feel like I'm gaining so much fitness from runs like that. The altitude is about 6,100 ft and it's all dirt which also makes it a little better for getting a grind. Went 6:59, 6:23, 6:14, 6:19, 6:20, 6:08, 6:01, 6:07, (started really increasing the effort at this point, but it's uphill so the times don't show it) 6:21, 6:21, 6:14, 6:06, 6:11, 6:16, 6:49. Very proud of the effort. Went to breakfast with the guys after and just chilled out before driving the hour back home.

Sunday 8/12/18

Recovery and rest day! Slept, stretched, and ate a lot.

Recap: This week was a really solid week. No pains that I'm too worried about. Got in good mileage, and a good workout and long run. The smoke made me devote more time to travel and stuff like that, but I think that it's a good way to show myself how committed I really am. I was good at going hard in my workouts, keeping my easy days easy, and getting enough food in me. One thing I will work on next week is getting to sleep earlier.
