The Scoop: Twanisha Terry Sets NCAA Lead In 100m

Performances At Mt. SAC Were Absolutely Money

1. Volcano Vista (NM) senior Jericho Cleveland lowered his US No. 1 split at 1600m and his overall nation-leading mile time in a winning effort of 4:07.89 and 4:09.42, respectively, continuing a rather surprising turn as the country's top miler. Based out of New Mexico, Cleveland produced his first sub-4:10 mile at Mt. SAC and inched closer to under 4:05 for 1600m. Seven runners were under 4:15 for 1600m and six were under 4:16 for one mile.

2. Two weeks after running well at Arcadia, the Great Oak's girls and boys programs continued to lower their nation-leading times in a number of relays. The boys, for starters, went a US No. 1 mark of 17:25.02 in the 4x1600m relay and were just a few hundredths off their US No. 1 in the DMR, while the girls booked US No. 1 bids at 4x1600 in 20:06.96 and 9:03.31 for 4x800.

3. Loyola (CA) High's boys, however, took center stage in the 4x800, finishing past the Wolfpack in the 4x800 in a new leading time of 7:45.77. Great Oak was second in 7:46.26, while Dana Hills was third in 7:52.26.

4. Saugus (CA) High's Mariah Castillo, a TCU signee, skirted right past La Costa Canyon (CA) High's McKenna Brown in the one-mile, producing a new US No. 1 1600m split and one-mile time of 4:43.69 and 4:45.24, respectively. Brown, who owned that mark since Arcadia, was second in 4:45.46 and 4:47.01, but wasn't able to catch Castillo, who has been remarkable at a number of distances in 2018. She's been one of the nation's top distance runners from the 800m to the 3200m, with her performance on Friday clearly indicating there's more to come.

5. A fierce 3200m battle in the girls race came down to Maddy Denner and Claudia Lane. And at the finish line it was Denner of Oak Ridge who crossed first in 10:08.01. Lane was second in 10:18.68. With an automatic 3200m qualifier for Brooks PR on the line, it was Denner who snagged it, though there were some extremely impressive performances from Oak Park's Sylvia Cruz Albrecht (10:18.74), Cheyenne Central (WY) High's Aubrey Frentheway (10:27.49), and Oak Park's Sarah Shulze (10:41.57). Freshman Libby McGrath, traveling from Texas, was sixth overall in 10:48.48.

6. One of the best prep performances -- in a collegiate race -- during Friday's action was in the 1500m, where Ole Miss recruit Dalton Hengst went after it. The unattached runner who hails from York, Pennsylvania, competed in an open men's field and finished second in his heat at 3:45.59, which converts out to a full mile of 4:03.57. That's five seconds faster than anyone who's run the distance so far this year nationally. On top of that, Hengst's effort cut five seconds off his previous US No. 1 of 3:50.18 from earlier this season.

7. Josh Hoey is back! The Bishop Shanahan (PA) High senior and Oregon signee finished 10th in his heat of the 800m in a new US No. 1 of 1:48.72, though he was competing against collegiate athletes and professionals. That effort is barely a second off his indoor national record of 1:47.67, which he achieved over the winter in a collegiate race in Boston. Only 10 athletes have broken 1:48 seconds outdoors all-time and only two have gone under 1:47, with Michael Granville's 1:46.45 from 1996 still standing as the national record. But you would have to think Hoey is easily within striking distance after his debut.

8. Long Beach Poly's Ariyonna Augustine had a pretty good day. She won the 100m in a wind-legal US No. 8 time of 11.67 (+0.2) before finishing second in the 200m in a US No. 11 mark of 24.05 and helping her squad to second-place outings in the 4x100 (45.97) and the 4x200 (1:40.71).

9. Jada Hicks logged a US No. 3 bid in the 100mH in 13.54 (+1.3) seconds and anchored upland to a win in the 4x100 in 45.71.

10. Sean Lee made it four jumps now over 7-feet in the high jump. The Trabuco Hills (CA) High senior went 7-2 to win the invitational field and was four inches higher than the second-place competitor.
