Four Battles To Watch At Utah State Meet: 14 Nationally Ranked Teams & Individuals

Whitney Rich (blue) won the Murray Invitational in early September ahead of Class 5A rivals Sara Musselman (red) and Aubrey Argyle (black and yellow), whose American Fork and Davis squads are in the mix for the team title.

Class 5A Girls

Saucony Flo50 Teams: #17 American Fork, #22 Davis
Individual Challengers: Whitney Rich (Bingham), McKenna Lee (Weber), Sara Musselman (American Fork), Aubrey Argyle (Davis)

American Fork and Davis are the most dominant teams in the recent history of Utah's largest cross country classification. Here are the results from the past six state meets:

2015 - AF 41, Davis 51

2014 - AF 46, Davis 58

2013 - Davis 27, AF 90

2012 - Davis 37, AF 51

2011 - Davis 44, Lehi 88

2010 - Davis 58, Skyline 86, AF 110

Both teams return five runners this year--AF four of top five, Davis three of top five--and appear to be fairly evenly matched. Their sole meeting at the Bob Firman Invitational saw Fork score 102 points (1:37 spread, 18:53 5K average) for second place and Davis score 116 points (1:21 spread, 18:58 5K average) for second and third place, respectively, behind Oregon's Jesuit High School.

Both teams have a potential individual champion in seniors Sara Musselman and Aubrey Argyle, both of whom won region titles. Musselman of Fork defeated Argyle by 28 seconds at Bob Firman, though Argyle was fourth at the 2015 state meet and Musselman was fifth.

The No. 2 and No. 3 finishers from last year also return: McKenna Lee, who placed 17th at Foot Locker, and Whitney Rich, who is undefeated vs. Utah competition this year and whose only loss was to No. 24 ranked Anna Gibson of Wyoming.
