Michael Slagowski of Rocky Mountain, Idaho became the ninth prep to break four minutes in the mile on Friday night with a 3:59.54 effort at the Nike Jesuit Twilight in Portland, Ore. He is the second-fastest miler in prep-only competition, behind only Jim Ryun's 3:58.3 effort from 1965.
His mark ranks No. 7 all-time in history and is not completely out of nowhere, as he recently ran a solo 1:48.70 for 800m. Both times rank No. 1 in the nation this year.
