Top 5 Moments At USATF Junior Nationals, Day 3

2. Carlton Orange Goes Sub-1:50 In Style, U.S. No. 5 All-Time 1:47.67

The 1:50 barrier for 800m is one that differentiates 'very good' prep athletes from 'outstanding' prep athletes. Memphis, Tenn. senior Carlton Orange has raced on the slower side of that spectrum for the past two years now, but in his final high school race, blew through the standard while hitting the fifth-fastest time in prep history - 1:47.67.

He did so even without national leader Donavan Brazier in the field. Brazier, who won Brooks PR last weekend in U.S. No. 4 All-Time 1:47.55, was disqualified after cutting in too early in the prelims.

"That's very unfortunate, but I just had to keep my mind focused on today's race," Orange said.

Derek Holdsworth took the field out in monster splits of 27 for 200m and 51.3 for 400m, with Orange in tow.

"[My coach and I talked about] going with everybody at 300 and giving it all to God that last 300 and that's what I did," he said.

The time was a huge three-second personal best for Orange. Last weekend at Brooks PR, he finished three seconds behind Brazier's 1:47.

The two stars will rematch throughout their college careers in the SEC, as Orange will run for Arkansas next year while Brazier heads to Texas A&M.
