Top 5 Moments At USATF Junior Nationals, Day 1

5. Haley Showalter Poised For Hammer Defense

One week after earning All-American honors in the Discus at New Balance Nationals, Valor Christian, Co. senior Haley Showalter threw her first 160-foot-plus heave to take fourth at USATF Jr. Nationals. The effort, officially U.S. No. 8 160-8, granted Showalter honors as the top high schooler in the field. Ivy League record holder Josie Natrasevschi of Brown won the event with 175-7.

"[I was] trying to flatten the disc out and not throw it straight up in the air," Showalter said. "I just flattened it out a little and got the release down."

The real work starts tomorrow for the Wisconsin recruit, as she looks to defend her USATF Jr. National title in the Hammer Throw. Showalter is the No. 8 All-Time prep performer in the event, with a best of 193-4 set last year.

"I definitely have huge expectations for myself in that event because I jumped so high from sophomore year to junior year," she said. "So, tomorrow, I hopefully break through this plateau I'm at right now since I haven't PRed since last summer."

A win tomorrow would mark not only a defense of her USATF title, but her second national title in consecutive weekends. She won New Balance Nationals Outdoor last weekend in Greensboro, N.C. by four feet.
