New Balance Nationals: VA Boys Individuals Preview

Field Events

In the field events Virginia has quite a few competitors vying for titles. In the first event, the high jump VA has four competitors including Xyan Xrichardson, Spencer O'neil, James Carver, and state leader Bradley Jones. Bradley has a seasons best of 6-10 but will need a 7-0 pr to secure the title this weekend. He is very capable of doing that and the favorite for representing Virginia.

In the triple jump we have our second largest field event field with six VA competitors. We have Knight, Hill, Lim, and Harrell in the unseeded flight and then Marcellus Fletcher and DaJuan Seward in the seeded flight. Both of these guys have flirted with the 50-0 barrier this entire season and if they break it this weekend could be on the podium in the next 72 hours.

In the final jump we have the top seed and favorite for the title Grant Holloway. At 6A States Grant jumped a monster 25-8.75 to improve his personal best by a couple feet! He is currently US #1 and has chosen this year to attempt to win a long jump title instead of a high jump title.

This event however has the largest Virginia contingent with 8 competitors hailing from the Old Dominion state including King, Fletcher, Agyei, Middleton, Seward, and Sessoms joining Grant. Virginia has four jumpers in the top flight which could spell a lot of all-american finishes.

VA has three in the boys shot and three in the boys discus. VISAA Champ Grant Voeks is entered in both events as well is Grassfield's Owen Chappell who was the 6A State Champion this season. They are joined by 5A State discus champion, and only a sophomore, Connor Scott of Lee-Davis and shot put specialist Ben Beatty.

The pole vault will only feature one Virginian with Andrew Arlint of Battlefield, the 6A state champion this season, vaulting in the first of two flights.

Virginia's final championship representation will be in the decathlon where all-american Isaac Agyemang and Jack Claiborne are slated to compete. They will have the 100, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400m dash on Saturday and then the 110h, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500m run on Sunday.

Virginia has no competitors in the steeple chase, hammer throw, or javelin.
