New Balance Nationals: VA Boys Individuals Preview

Distance

Virginia has five guys representing us in the 800 but none in the seeded section this year. Though that could actually be to our benefit as winning out of the unseeded sections in the 800 has become quite the common thing. We have Devin Barnes (5A State Champ), Tayvon Burris (6A State Champ), Chris Short (3A State Champ), Alex Maguire (6A State 1600m Champ) and Tyson Robinson all running in this event.

In the mile we have three individuals including two in the seeded section. Alex Corbett who has a serious shot at winning the 2 Mile race will be in the unseeded section and in the seeded section we have Peter Seufer and Matthew Novak.

Leading our hopes though in this event and with a serious shot at taking home the title is Matthew Novak of Deep Run. He has run 4:06 this season in the 1600 and could seriously run 4:01 for the full mile if he has the race he has been waiting for. Last season he finished with all-american honors.

In the two mile we have the aforementioned Corbett leading the way. Corbett has already broke 9:00 for the 3200m race and could do so for the full two mile as well. He is Virginia's only runner in this race and will be one of 19 guys to toe the line. He likes to push the pace late and that could help him significantly with this large field.

Trying to bring home the distance sweep for Virginia will be Peter Seufer of E.C. Glass in the 5,000m. Peter was the 4A State XC Champ this past fall and a Foot Locker National Finalist. This race will be great to watch and Peter's serious chance for a national title. He has been racing very well recently and after seeing him compete at Penn Relays we are sure he can come back VA with the title.
