Dream Boys 100 Preview: What Happens With Two Different Kinds Of Speed Meet?

Darryl Haraway is one of the nation’s fastest 100 meter sprinters. He ran a wind legal 10.20 last year to win the New Balance Nationals Indoor title. Last weekend, the DeMatha Catholic (MD) senior ran a season best 10.22 clocking at the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque.

Michael Norman is the nation’s fastest in the 200 and 400 meter dash. The Vista Murietta (CA) junior is coming off putting on quite a show at the California State Meet last weekend including a US #6 all-time performances in both the 400 at 45.19 as well as the 200 at 20.30. He also split 44.9 on his 4x400 meter relay. Keep in mind, he is still a junior! Now, Norman's next test is to see what he can do in the open 100 after walking down many anchor legs in California this past spring in the 4x100 meter relay.

The Florida State recruit Haraway is just finding his grove after a football injury in the fall impacted his training and got him off to a slow start in the indoor season and early outdoor season. He is ready to show what he can do in his final high school race after a somewhat letdown senior year after his national championship close to his junior year.

His last month of races has shown Haraway is back at top form. His most impressive race of the season might have came at the WCAC Championships meet in mid May when he ran a 10.59 100 into a -2.7 headwind! That would have likely been the equivalent of 10.22 wind legal 100 on a still wind day and faster with a slight breeze.

Meanwhile, Norman is ready to show what he can do in a 100 meter dash. The last time that he ran a 100 was in a dual meet last spring as a sophomore with a 10.73 clocking. One has to expect after running a 20.30 in the 200, which is essentially back to back 10.30 100’s in a race, that Norman can blow that PR out of the water in the adidas Dream 100 on Saturday. There is still a lot of unknown on what kind of time in the 100 that Norman can throw down, but would seem only natural to expect that the US leader in the 200 and 400 could produce something quickly and potentially the win over the proven shorter sprinter in Haraway.

While Haraway and Norman are the two biggest names in the race, three more to give real looks at as far as darkhorse picks including South Carolina state champion Tavien Feaster, Nevada state champion Ian Mack, and Florida state champion Devin Quinn.

Feaster might be the diamond in the rough for this race as the state of South Carolina is often overlooked on the national scene, but ran a 10.42 wind legal time in the 100 at his state meet and also set a state record in the 200 meter dash with a 21.11 clocking. He is only a junior too, so a great opportunity to build his name nationally with a fast time and strong finish in the Dream 100 on Saturday.

Mack swept the sprint titles at the Nevada state meet in the 100, 200, and 400 showcasing his great range while had a monumental victory earlier in the season in the 100 meter dash at the elite Arcadia Invitational in a wind legal 10.44 clocking. The Green Valley (NV) senior has a 100 meter PR of 10.31 (no wind reading), which ranks second fastest only to Haraway's 10.20 in the field.

Devin Quinn won arguably the toughest and deepest auto qualifier race for the boys 100 to get to New York as the Florida 3A state champ ran away with first at the Golden South Classic in Orlando with a wind legal best time of 10.49. Quinn ran 10.31 earlier in the season an invitational without a wind reading and clocked a 10.35 100 just last week in a wind-aided Great Southwest fast heat with Haraway and the Jamaicans from Calabar.
