Thursday Highlights from Penn Relays

5:45pm Girls 3k Championship

Kate Murphy (VA) throws the #1 up as she crosses the line first in 9:32.82

The girls 3k field was loaded with numerous All-Americans and even saw some top HS distance stars from Canada. The early leader was Hannah Debalsi who won this event last year and had 2nd fastest 3k/3200m/2mile time entering today with her 9:55 sophomore class record 2 mile. Weini Kelati's 9:13 3k from IAAF World Juniors last summer was the fastest seed time. Despite both of these ladies outstanding credentials, both fell off the fast pace with Kelati (and Bella Burda, NY) being the first to go. After bringing a pack of seven through the 1600m in 5:09, Debalsi hung on as long as she could before falling off the pack at the bell lap leaving only two sophomores from Virginia, Kate Murphy (VA) and Libby Davidson (VA) to battle two tough Canadians, Shona McCulloch and Branna MacDougall.

Reigning Champ Debalsi (4) leads Murphy (4) and rest of field early on

It was the Murphy, the 2 Mile runner-up at NBNI, who charged home shaking off the Canadiens but not quite Davidson (6th place at Foot Locker this past fall) as Davidson finished in 2nd in 9:34.12, 1.4 seconds behind fellow VA sophomore Murphy.
