What to Watch: Indoor Track Meets 2/28

28th New England Indoor Track & Field Championships (MA)

How many titles can the versatile Kate Hall win?

  • Kate Hall - The Iowa State commit is a 20-plus time Maine State Champion, but has only won the New England Championship once indoors and once outdoors, both times in 2013 for the 55m and 100m dashes. Hall is coming off a triple victory at the Class B State Championship in the 55m, 200m and long jump; she is entered in the 55m (US #8 6.99) and long jump (US #1 20-1.5). She could get some competition in the 55m from 7.09 runner Quashira McIntosh.
  • Girls 2 Mile - Expect this race to be Hannah DeBalsi vs. the clock. The US #5 10:32.9 3,200m/US #2 10:50.41 2 Mile runner will look to take down her own New England Meet Record of 10:12.95, set last year.
  • Boys 2 Mile - Well, that looks familiar. Eric van der Els and Alex Ostberg will line up for a rematch of their nail-biter CIAC State Open Championship last weekend. Van der Els won that race, 9:17.39 to 9:17.72. Ostberg's Darien teammate Armstrong Noonan, third in 9:21.68, also returns.
  • Girls One Mile - Two sub-five milers with the same name, it's Kaleigh Hughes vs. Kaley Richards. The ladies are ranked US #13 4:56.35 to US #14 4:56.78; senior Hughes has edged Richards this season for the MIAA State title and at New Balance Grand Prix. US #1 4:34.3 1,500m runner Eliza Rego will be in the mix.

  • Can Joe Luongo break Cass Loxsom's 600m Meet Record? - St. John's Prep senior Joe Luongo has enjoyed a fairly dominant season, but can he take down the New England Meet Record of 1:18.72? The Harvard commit currently ranks US #2 at 1:18.84, so it's certainly right there. The record belongs to Cass Loxsom, who broke the American Record at the distance with 1:15.58 this year.
  • Girls 1k - This may be the most stacked race in the entire meet, as 13 girls are seeded at 3 minutes flat or faster. The stars of the show will be US # 3 Maegan Doody vs. US #4 Hannah Parker in a rematch of the New Hampshire Indoor Track & Field Championship. Junior won that race over U-Conn commit Parker, 2:49.08 to 2:49.24.
  • Boys 1k - The boys' field is headlined by P.J. Garmon, US #6 2:27.45, who finished third at the Armory Track Invitational. At the meet, he declared his intention to go after the New England Meet Record of 2:25.14, set by Said Ahmed in 2001.
