The indoor season pretty much wrapped up this weekend, while outdoors continued to press forward, creating numerous national highlights. In this week's Monday News & Notes, we discuss the growing rivalry between Rachel Laurent (LA) and Shade Weygandt (TX) in the girls pole vault, a great 3200m race between Foot Locker finalists Evan Appel (CO) and Bobby Nicolls (CO) (pictured to left by Beth O'Neill) and a few more tidbits. Joe Franlin took his time and paced himself, as the elite field in the high school seeded division of the Boys 3200m at the FSU Relays thinned out. And then he dropped the hammer big time, picked his way through the pack, and then blew the doors off on the last lap. He finished with a 9:15 over Connor Revord. So much for the theory the Florida state meet 1600 meter record holder is only an 800-1600 guy. Franklin has always worked to show his versatility and break out of anyone who would pigeon hole his talent into one event. Going into the race, reportedly Franklin was reluctant to even run the event. But at the insistance of his coach and his father he entered anyway instead of focusing on the mile! Glad he did so we get a chance to see this gem of a race! After her impressive NIN/NSIC pole vault sweep last weekend, Rachel Laurent (LA) (pictured right winning NSIC by Don Rich) continued her national domination of the event by clearing the magical 14 foot barrier at the Nollie Arcement Relays in Louisiana. After her 14-00 clearance, Laurent raised the bar to 14-1.75, half an inch above Anthony's record outdoors, barely missing it on her final attempt.

Top 400 runner in US signs with Gamecocks By Christopher Hunt Most of the top track and field athletes in the country had already made their choice and at this point she could barely show up to a track meet without someone asking where she’d be going to school next fall. She signed her National Letter of Intent in the Stan Staplin Media Center of the New Balance Armory moments after winning the 400 at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in 52.85 seconds. Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, Luke Puskedra (wearing #1 on chest, photo by John Herzog) is an imposing figure. The race of the weekend, the boys two-mile, saw these two battle it out in similar fashion to their mile race earlier in the indoor season at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games.
