Simplot Games Pole Vault Winner Sondre Guttorsmen Breaks 32-Year-Old Record

United States and Norwegian dual-national Sondre Guttormsen, a recent addition to Davis High in California, added to his lore on Saturday by breaking a 32-year-old pole vault record at The Simplot Games in Idaho.

Guttormsen cleared 17 feet, 9.50 inches to win the event, breaking the old record of 17-6.25.

And the California prep's clearance also gives him two of the top five vaults nationally this indoor season -- the other three belong to Mondo Duplantis, who went 18-8.5 on Saturday in Louisiana.

Guttormsen, though, continues to rise up the pole vault ranks. In January he became just the second prep all-time to clear 18 feet in the event, dropping a top height of 18-0 at the National Pole Vault Summit in Nevada. The clearance was also a Norwegian Junior Record.

Guttormsen told Dyestat after The Simplot Games his hopes are to reach 18-8.25 by the outdoor season.
