Are These National High School Records Untouchable?

Boys 5K

Portland Central Catholic's Galen Rupp (pictured) came of age in high school, logging a national record time of 13:37.91 in the 5K in 2004. The closest we came to that effort recently came in a regular season meet was at the Texas Distance Festival, when a group of top distance talent waged a battle on the track. The top time of the night, by St. Joseph Notre Dame (Ca.) High's Cooper Teare, was 14:13. But realistically, the last time someone ran that fast, his name was Chris Derrick, his time was 13:55.96 and the year was 2008.

Closest overall: Gerry Lindgren, Spokane Rodgers (Wa.), 13:44.0, 1964

Closest in 2017: Cooper Teare, St. Joseph Notre Dame (Ca.), 14:13.26
