17 Bold Predictions For 2017

Tyrese Cooper's only loss in the outdoor 200m this spring was at the Great Southwest Classic in New Mexico.

Tyrese Cooper will get beat

Florida's Tyrese Cooper is heir to the high school sprint throne after the 2016 graduation of Noah and Josephus Lyles and Michael Norman. Cooper, who trains with Miami Gardens Xpress track club, set national freshman class records in the 200m and 400m last year at 20.62 and 45.23. The ninth-grader swept both events at New Balance Nationals Outdoor* and was undefeated in both save for a third-place finish in the 200m at the Great Southwest Classic behind Shamon Ehiemua of Texas and Maxwell Willis of D.C.

With so much success so early, it's hard to see anyone toppling Cooper in the 200m or 400m --though make note that he is not as strong in the 100m and took second at the Florida state meet in that event. But as impressive it is to win two high school national titles as a freshman, I do not think he will do it again this year.

* - Tyrese Cooper won the Championship section of the 400m at New Balance Nationals Outdoor, and the Emerging Elite section of the 200m. His winning 200m time of 20.9 would have placed third in the Championship section behind Champion Allison and Khance Meyers, both of whom return as seniors this year.
