2016 Class 3A Boys Pre-Season Relays Preview

The Evanston Wildcat quartet of Malachi Adams, Reggie Murphy, Marcus Starks, Brad Garron cut loose in the 4x2 (Colin Boyle)

4x200m-

2015 State Champion: Evanston 1:26.81

Outlook: The Wildkits copped the indoor title and later the official outdoor state championship ahead of Chicago Public League fave Dunbar. Both teams have suffered heavily through graduation and will probably be out of the championship race when May rolls around. Plainfield schools are in the boat with key pieces gone. East and North have proven through depth they can reload in a hurry. The same will go for Edwardsville. The defending team champions placed seventh but may want to move up the charts and get complimentary pieces to support Travis Anderson (Jr.). Collinsville did not get much respect when they ran 1:27.66. There were a few chuckles in the crowd when they finished last in the final. There will not be much laughter against the Kahoks this season. They return three top juniors to the lineup. Of course there will be a few teams not mentioned step up. This event is a staple in Illinois and when ever there are more than a few solid athletes laying around, they will get thrusted into the relay.

4x400m-

2015 State Champion: East St. Louis Senior 3:15.24

Outlook: Is there a bigger favorite returning in recent years than two-time defending champion ESL? In fact, the Flyers won the 2A title in 2013. Led by Roosevelt Davis and Kevin Johnson this dynamic duo has never been beaten in crunch time. Their program has the all-time record 3:13.66 and it is in serious jeopardy. Don't be surprised to see it fall sometime during the regular season against arch rival Cahokia. For the first time in several seasons, Neuqua Valley is not a slam dunk to be one of the elite units. Maybe not? The Wildcats have a deep team and it's time for Isaiah Robinson (Jr.) to step up and put a portion of this team on his back. The rest of the top teams appear to be a patchwork operation with one or two legs. It is these situations that make it difficult to predict outcomes. But if one had to take a stab at it, the logical choices would be Lake Villa (Lakes), Homewood-Flossmoor, Edwardsville, Cary-Grove, and Oak Park-River Forest.
