Kate Murphy Outlasts The Pack, Soph Brodey Hasty Over Early Leader Murray

Kate Murphy Outlasts Elly Henes

After running with the pack for the first half of the race, Kate Murphy won the NXN Southeast race in 17:00. Behind her were, in order, North Carolina's Elly Henes, Florida's Rafaella Gibbons, Tennessee's U.S. #24 Taylor Cuneo, and, in her return from injury, Virginia's Rachel McArthur.

Murphy's Lake Braddock team will also make the trip to Portland, as they won the team title with 62 points. That makes two teams from Virginia on the girls side, as defending champions Blacksburg took runner-up honors with 99 points.

Sophomore Brodey Hasty Over Early Leader Murray

Though Delaware state champ Kevin Murray had an ample lead two miles into the race, Tennessee sophomore Brodey Hasty took the 'W' at the NXN Southeast championship on Saturday morning. Murray hung on for second, while Frank Pittman of Marist, Ga. was third, Lake Braddock's Colin Schaefer was fourth and Broughton's Jeremy Brown (US #20) was fifth.

The team race was every bit as wide open as predicted, as the Marietta (GA) boys won a wild team race over Florida's Trinity Prep. Just thirteen points separated the second automatic qualifier from sixth place! Here's how it shook out

Marietta (GA) 156
Trinity Prep (FL) 191
Weddington (NC) 196
Broughton (NC) 197
Our Lady of Good Counsel (MD) 201
Brentwood (TN) 204

Even more wild is that Marietta won the team race with just five boys starting the race.
