Werner Visser nailed South Africa's first-ever discus gold medal at the World Youth Championships with a throw of 64.24m (210-9.25). The event was pegged to be a showdown between Visser and Sweden's Wictor Petersson and it progressed according to plan, with the Swede leading the qualification round.

However, Petersson endured a tough day in the final and was one of the first eliminated, leaving Visser to simply execute. The 17-year-old South African threw 64.24m in his opening attempts, which was enough to take home the gold even after fouling his last three throws.

Ashton Eaton on Werner Visser: "It’s surprisingly difficult to perform when it counts in a technical event."
