Saucony Flo50 Summer Training Blog: Rafaella Gibbons

Week 3 (July 20-24)

This is my third week and I’m at camp for the whole week! The camp our team goes to during the summer is in Brevard, North Carolina at Brevard College. Every run that the camp schedules for us is very hilly and long since it’s up in the mountains. We also do a lot of team building exercises and have a lot of free time to go outside and hang out with your teammates or other teams. In the morning you have a choice to do a run around campus or do activities like core or yoga and most mornings I chose core. This is my second year going and I’m super excited! Also I have a GPS watch so the mileage I write down is based on my watch which means the mileage might be a little off.

Monday- In the morning I chose to do core and stretching. Then we ran about 6 miles at a place called Lake Imaging. It’s a very pretty run with rolling hills and we ended our run at Hooker Falls. The hills were pretty tough since it was our first run and I am already sore. One of the activities today was dodge ball but we sadly lost in the first round.

Tuesday- I chose to do core in the morning again and we ran around 4.5 miles total at Mt. Bracken. It starts off with 1.5 miles going straight up, 1 mile flat, and then 2 miles of rolling downhils. This run was one of the hardest runs I’ve ever run and I think it’s almost as hard as Art Leob. One of the activities today was basketball and both the boys and girls won the tournament!

Wednesday- I ran for 20 minutes in the morning since I felt very sore and we ran 5 miles at a place called Guidon Farms, which is rolling hills and the last mile being flat. It doesn’t sound hard but being sore sadly made the run harder but thankfully it wasn’t too hard before the hardest run of the week being tomorrow! Later we had Camp Olympics, which are all these activities your team has to do like a dance off and musical chairs where if you lose you get food thrown on you. We came in second place!

Thursday- We ran this trail called Art Loeb and it’s the hardest run at camp that’s about 7 miles! There is a cutoff you have to make to be able to go higher up the mountain and the hills are really steep and long. Eight out of the ten girls made it up it would have been nine but sadly she fell. There is one incline that is about a half mile long and once you get to the top it’s about 4 miles downhill. After we ran we just had free time and team building activities.

Friday- Friday is the day we have our “graduation run” which is a run called John’s Rock and it’s about 5 miles long. It is also a steep run going up but the view is definitely worth it, but sadly we took a picture when it was foggy. The run is all downhill after reaching the top and we had all free time after the run. Since it was the last day there was also a fun dance.

Saturday- Flew back home and day off

Total mileage: 29 miles
