Just as in the 100 the two U.S. entrants are not ranked high on the entry list, ranking No. 9 and No. 18 but both should content for spots in the final. Josephus Lyles of T.C. Williams (Alexandria, Va.) was just second at the U.S. Trials running 21.35. However, that came after run a high qualify 400 earlier in the day and his personal best is 21.02 in finishing second to his brother in the State 6A final. Maxwell Willis (pictured) of Bowie (Md.) won the U.S trials in 21.21 running into a 1.8 meter per second wind. Willis also finished second at the Great Southwest Invitational in Albuquerque (N.M.) running a wind-aided 20.55 with a slightly over the allowable 2.6 meter per second breeze. Abdul Hakim Sani Brown of Japan must be considered the favorite with a best of 20.56 and four times under 20.75. The South African duo of Tlotlise Leotlela and Kyle Appel, at 20.63 and 20.73, rank as No. 2 and 3 in the meet. Doubling back from the 100 are Akanni Hislop of Trinidad-Tobacco, at 20.73, and Derick Silva of Brazil, at 20.92.
