At the start of the run you'll also see NJ*NY TC's Travis Mahoney and Rob Napolitano offer some pacing help while they complete their own workouts. Braddock, a junior at Southern Regional, came through the 1600m mark around 4:28 en route to the sub-9.
Braddock was coming off a 9:06.86 fourth place finish at the Indoor NJSIAA Meet of Champions before the outdoor season was cancelled due to COVID-19. His previous recorded outdoor PR was a 9:54.06 during a sophomore season cut short by injury.
Braddock is the top indoor returner for New Jersey in the 3200m thanks to that 9:06 at the end of winter, and he also leads all New Jersey runners at Holmdel Park heading into this coming cross country season with his 15:49 Group 4 state title run.
Quick Questions With Braddock
First off how good did that feel? How long was this time trial planned for? Same weekend as the Meet of Champions have any significance or just a way to wrap up a "season" of training from home?
That time trial felt great. Maybe not the race part itself, but having something to prepare for really kept me going in such an unprecedented time. The time trial has been in the works since April, but really came together in the last few weeks. Doing the time trial on the same weekend as MOC's was a bit of a coincidence as far as scheduling, but I still think it symbolizes just how competitive this season could have been throughout the state.
What has your training been like during all this? How have you handled it? I'm sure it has been a bit of a learning curve especially with no solidified dates to train around workout wise.
Training has definitely changed a bit . We backed off on the intensity, and treated this time as a base phase for Cross Country. That being said, many of the workouts were long, slower grinds as opposed to quicker workouts we would have been doing if the season went as planned. At first, I was more than a bit upset that the spring season was gone. Within a week though, I thought it'd be best to take advantage of all this newfound time, and really focus on the purpose every run, whether it be fast or slow, workout or recovery. My coach came up with what I believe is a great plan that I was able to buy into and try to get a tiny bit better everyday.
You were having a great junior year - top returner at Holmdel Park from the fall, top returner in the state for the 3200m indoors, and obviously judging by this sub-9 performance you were looking forward to big things this spring. What does nailing this time trial down do for you mentally and (as long as we get to run) any specific goals heading into this next competition year?
This time trial was a good indicator that I'm in decent shape right now. If we'd done more track work or done any time trials prior to this one, I believe I could've went a bit faster. That being said, my focus is more geared toward the Fall. Being so far out from Cross Country, my goals are very big, but I think this helps keep me motivated.
As far as specific goals go, winning NXN and MOC's have got to be at the top of my list. I'd definitely like to lower the Ocean County Park record by a few seconds. I also like to think that Edward Cheserek's Holmdel record (14:53) is mortal, but I'll need to have quite the summer of training before anybody takes my record attempt at Holmdel serious!
