Marianapolis Preparatory School's (CT) Sydney Masciarelli the 2018 Foot Locker National Champion.
The Foot Locker Northeast Region has indisputably two of the best female high school distance runners in the nation with North Rockland's (NY) Katelyn Tuohy and Marianapolis Preparatory School's Sydney Masciarelli.
Based on history--and North Rockland's team on the cusp of making NXN each year--Tuohy will more than likely chose to run NXN over Foot Locker. If she doesn't, she would be one of the favorites for not only the Northeast title but also the Foot Locker National title.
Masciarelli was the Foot Locker Northeast champion (17:12.60) and the Foot Locker National champion (17:00.3 11). Despite the fact that she only competed in one indoor meet due to playing basketball, she picked up her winning ways without a hiccup during the outdoor track season. She completed a challenging distance double of 5K, 2 mile at New Balance Nationals Outdoor and won both races. The rising junior clocked a 16:16.20 for 5K and 10:11.99 for 2 mile at NBNO.
Even outside of Tuohy and Masciarelli, the Foot Locker Northeast Region is one of the strongest with seven of the 10 athletes who ran at nationals in 2018 returning for the 2019 cross country season. Three of those seven--not counting Masciarelli--were All-Americans finishing in the top 14 spots at nationals: Pomperaug (CT) High School's Kate Wiser, Northern (PA) High School's Marlee Starliper, and Falmouth (ME) High School's Sofie Matson. They were seventh, 13th, and 14th at nationals, respectively.
Starliper was second at the region meet in 2018 and had a strong track season this past spring, including a second-place finish in the 3000m, running 9:27.88 at the Pan-American U20 Championships.
