Brentwood Track Club's (TN) Brodey Hasty
became the second-fastest outdoor high school boys 3K athlete in US history on Saturday night in Nashville, Tennessee. He now sits behind only Drew Hunter
Purcellville, Virginia, who ran 7:59.33 indoors in 2016 and German Fernandez from Riverbank, California, who ran 7:59.83 outdoors in 2008.
Looking at only outdoor 3Ks, Hasty joins an exclusive list of athletes. Looking back to as far as 2001* there have been only two other athletes to run sub-8:10 in the 3K. Those athletes are Fernandez (7:59.83) and Galen Rupp (8:03.67). Matt Centrowitz came close to running sub-8:10 when he ran 8:10.30 in 2007 at Nike Outdoor Nationals.
The number of guys to run sub-8:20 since 2001 is only 28. Take a look at the table below to get an idea of how the numbers break down over the last six years. The table shows the number of athletes under 9:00 minutes in the 300m all the way down to the number of athletes who've run sub-eight minutes.
|Year|| Sub 8:00||Sub 8:15||Sub 8:30||Sub 8:45||Sub 9:00|
The table above was generated by pulling the top 150 athletes in the boys outdoor 3K from each of the past six years. There has been an overall trend of athletes running slower times in the 3K over the past six years. This could be partly due to the fact that the 3200m is being more widely run, but the numbers are worth noting as they take a sharp drop after 2016. The largest amount of guys to run sub-nine minutes in the 3K over the past six years was in 2014, when 174 guys ran faster than 9:00.
The table below shows the breakdown of the last athlete to make it on the top 150 list and what their time is. In 2014 we had to extend the number of athletes to top 200 because more than 150 guys ran sub-nine-minutes or faster.
After looking at all this it's easy to say that Hasty stands in an elite group of high school athletes. Take a look at the top 150 runners from each of the past six years below as well as the top all-time athletes since 2001 according to the MileSplit database.
