No. 25 Billerica Memorial High School (Billerica, MA)
Analysis: Billerica Memorial returns their top 7 from 2025 who were MIAA Division I runner-ups to Lexington 63-89. They also were 8th at NXR Northeast scoring 246 points with a 19:40 average.
Last year Kylie Donahue was the teams front runner. She went on to make massive jumps in the Mile and 2 Mile on the track running 4:51.33 and 10:39. Maya Niles was a big part of Billerica's success as an 8th grader as she and Donahue were both top 10 at MIAA States placing 5th and 9th respectively.
Overall, most of their top 6 took a step forward over the track season, but Evelyn Wesling could be the biggest boost to this team. She ran 19:13 in her first cross country season as a freshman, then dropped her Mile PR from 5:42 to 4:54.49 outdoors. While she seems to be more 800m-Mile than cross country focused, she's a different runner than she was a year ago.

No. 24 Katy (Katy, TX)
Analysis: Last year Katy took third at both the UIL 6A State Championship and NXR South Regional behind strong teams in Bridgeland and Flower Mound. Katy will return their full top 7 from those squads as they pursuit a UIL Team Title and NXR South top 2 finish this year.
Katy has a strong Top 5 who had just a 35 second 1-5 gap at the UIL State Championships last year which was the best in the 6A field. Vienna Fish was the teams #1 a year ago and showed nice progression over the track season running 5:02.08 for 1600m and 10:55.60 for 3200m, also finishing 5th in the UIL 6A 3200m.
Lauren Acopa, Kinley Skaggs, Abigail Lester and Avery Torrey make up the teams #2-#5 runners. As a whole, this group needs to take a step forward this spring to achieve some postseason success. Avery Torrey stands out with a 5:13.98 1600m and 10:26 3K outdoors and would expect her to be closer to the second or third Katy runner this season rather than the fifth, which is a big step for the team. With graduation hitting Bridgeland, we should see a exciting UIL 6A matchup between Katy, Flower Mound and South Lake Carroll for the team title and NXN spots this fall.

No. 23 Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach, CA)
Analysis: Last year, Mira Costa placed 13th at NXN and finished second in the CIF in both the Division 1 race and the CIF merge. They did graduated three of their NXN squad from last year including #1 Alana Clarke, #5 Kate Perrone and #6 Shane O'Brien.
They'll return Mia Ritter as their top returner who was the 58th finisher in all of CIF a year ago with Isabella Amy just behind in 72nd. Both were under 18 running 17:53 and 17:59 respectively. Isabella Amy was just behind in 18:05.
While they lost some key pieces from a year ago, their depth will fall off slightly, but Laney Phelps and Megan Shamaly both had strong track seasons running 5:14 and 5:15. They'll both have to prove it on the cross country course, but is a promising sign that Mira Costa will have a strong 1-5 pack this fall.
Rising senior Sadie Wilson did not race much in the 2025-2026 season, but holds a 17:15 3 Mile PR from 2024 as well as 4:57 1600m and 11:05 3200m during the spring of 2025. They'll also add in a star freshman Sunday Price who ran 5:15 for the 1600m during her 8th grade track season. Adding both of these girls clears up and depth concerns and is a massive boost to their top 5.

No. 22 Ridgewood (Ridgewood, NJ)
Analysis: Ridgewood was second at the NJISAA Meet of Championships fourth at the NXR Northeast regional and return their entire top 7 from last year.
They return Katherine Keating as their frontrunner who was fifth at the NJISAA Meet of Champions a year ago and holds a 17:46 5K personal best.
Natalie Knowles, Meave Schoeler and Penelope de Valence was the teams #2-#4. Knowles was 26th in the Northeast Regional running 18:56 to finish as their #2 last year. Schoeler had a huge track season running a 4:54.69 1600m and has been moving up in distance over her career after being focused on the 800m on the track until her 1600m success last spring. de Valence also had a great year on the track running 11:07 for 3200m.
The key to their team success will be having a fifth girl emerge. They do have close options from #5 through #7 in Ella Recchiuti, Hunter Witham and Abi Marino who hold 5K best of 19:11, 19:12 and 19:28. Riley Lubkemann hasn't run cross country before, and may not this year, but holds track bests of 2:17.93 and 5:19.45 that would be a huge boost to the program if she's joining them on the trails this fall.

No. 21 The Classical Academy (Colorado Springs, CO)
Analysis: Last years CHSAA 3A State Championship team returns their entire top 7 from 2025 who posted an impressive 24 points and 19:08 average at the state meet. They also placed 7th in a strong Southwest Region.
Vivian Jack was their top runner last year with a 17:34 personal best and 20th place finish in the Southwest Regional. Jack ran 4:50.74 for the Mile on the track as well as 10:43 for 3200m. She should improve to contend for a top 10 finish in the Southwest this fall.
Ellie Askew was the teams #2 with a personal best of 17:58. She also showed great improvement on the track running 5:08 and 11:09. Brynlee Nygren is a X factor that could be a big boost for Classical Academy. She had a big personal best at the Southwest Regional last year running 18:48, and went on to make a massive jump on the track running 5:10 and 11:20.
They'll have an expected #4 through #6 of Joy Ahnfeldt, Lena Larsen and Jane Yuschalk who give them great depth and versatility across their top 5 lineup each week. Yuschalk is strongest over 800m, but showed good progression in the 1600m on the track dropping from a 5:32 in 2025 to a 5:19 in 2026 and could give a boost if she can continue that success on the grass this spring.

No. 20

No. 20 Century (Bismark, ND)
Analysis: Century returns six of its top seven from last year's team that finished as the NDHSAA Class A runner-up and placed 15th at NXR Heartland. The Patriots are led by one of the best low sticks in the country in Ruby Ihmels, who ran 16:49 for 5K before recording outstanding track marks of 4:46.90 in the mile and 9:59.06 in the two mile.
Behind Ihmels, Century has an extremely young lineup with two sophomores, two freshmen and two eighth graders among its next six returners. Audrey Echelbarger and Izabella Bergquist both ran 5:16 during the track season, while Briella Bullinger added marks of 5:23.82 and 11:41.55. If that young group can continue developing and close the gap behind Ihmels, Century has the talent to challenge for the Class A championship and make a significant jump at NXR Heartland.

No. 19 Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran (Fort Wayne, IN)
Analysis: Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran returns five of its top seven from last year's team that finished as the IHSAA state runner-up to Carmel, 100-129. The Cadets also placed 3rd at NXR Heartland, where they displayed their impressive depth by becoming the first team to send five runners across the finish line. Daphne Weller gives Concordia Lutheran an elite low stick after running 17:18 for 5K, 4:50.11 for the mile and 10:25.55 for 3200m.
Leighton Archer ran 11:00.47 for 3200m as a freshman, while Brylee Crass made a major jump during the track season with marks of 5:01.24 and 11:00.27. Luci Hogue and Maddie Gentz return from the scoring lineup, and Gentz added 2:16.23 speed in the 800m. With five experienced scorers returning and several runners making significant progress on the track, Concordia Lutheran has the front-end talent and lineup depth to challenge Carmel for the state championship and contend for an automatic NXN berth.

No. 18 Boulder (Boulder, CO)
Analysis: Boulder returns five of its top seven from last year's team that placed 4th at the CHSAA 5A State Championships and 6th at NXR Southwest. The Panthers are led by Calia Vaughn, who ran 17:26 for 5K before producing outstanding track marks of 4:43.61 for 1600m and 10:45.44 for 3200m.
The group behind Vaughn showed plenty of progress during the track season. Emery Agnew ran 11:04.05 for 3200m, while Kajsa Wik recorded marks of 5:09.92 and 11:16.29 as a freshman. Senior Sophia Africa adds another experienced runner after posting an 18:00 cross country best and an 11:23.43 on the track. With a strong low stick and four of their top seven returners entering either their sophomore or junior seasons, Boulder has the talent and upside to move into state-title contention and climb the standings at NXR Southwest.

No. 17 Carmel (Carmel, IN)
Analysis: Carmel returns four of its top seven from last year's team that won the IHSAA State Championship, defeating Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran 100-129. The Greyhounds went on to place 4th at NXR Midwest, finishing just two points behind Concordia Lutheran. Seniors Annabel Pollert and Larkin Taylor give Carmel one of the strongest front-running duos in the region after both ran under 17:35 for 5K.
Pollert recorded track bests of 4:48.91 for the mile and 10:23.62 for 3200m, while Taylor ran 4:48.49 and 10:34.35. Margo Halle gives the Greyhounds a proven third runner after breaking 18:00 during cross country and running 11:13.44 on the track. Carmel will need its developing runners to fill out the back of the scoring lineup, but its elite top three and championship experience give the Greyhounds an opportunity to defend their state title and contend for an NXN berth.

No. 16 James W. Robinson (Fairfax, VA)
Analysis: James W. Robinson returns five of its top seven, including the top four runners from last year's VHSL Class 6 state championship lineup. The Rams narrowly missed qualifying for NXN after placing 3rd at the Southeast Regional, finishing just 19 points away from an automatic berth. Petra Gruendel leads the returning group after running 17:28 for 5K before recording track bests of 4:46.20 for 1600m and 10:39.88 for 3200m.
Karina Bird and Alexandra Bird both broke 18:00 last fall and followed with sub-4:58 marks for 1600m and sub-10:44 performances for 3200m. Claire Andersen gives Robinson a fourth runner under 11:00 for 3200m after running 10:54.07 as a freshman, while Isabella Willard adds another potential scorer with a 5:03.83 track best. With four proven runners at the front and plenty of experience competing at the championship level, Robinson has the talent to defend its state title and contend for its first NXN appearance.

No. 15 Lexington (Billerica, MA)
Analysis: Lexington returns its entire top five from last year's team that won the MIAA Division 1 Meet of Champions and placed 6th at NXR Northeast. Jane Conrad gives Lexington a strong low stick after running 17:18 for 5K and following it with track bests of 4:59.74 for the mile and 10:38.76 for the two mile.
Behind Conrad, Lexington returns an incredibly tight pack of Callie Glenn, Ella Tyson, Erin Ehmann and Alycia Charest, who were separated by only six seconds based on their 2025 5K bests. Tyson ran 10:51.96 for 3200m during the track season, while Glenn recorded a 5:01.51 mile and Charest ran 11:14.20 for two miles. With its complete championship scoring lineup returning and additional depth emerging behind it, Lexington will be positioned to defend its state title and challenge for an NXN berth out of the Northeast.

No. 14 Pella (Pella, IA)
Analysis: Pella returns its second through sixth runners from last year's team that won the Iowa Class 3A state championship. The Dutch will have to replace individual state champion Marissa Ferebee, but Elsie Brenneman appears ready to take over the lead role after running 18:05 for 5K and 9:41.48 for 3000m. Pella also placed 3rd at NXR Heartland with 114 points, finishing just 27 points behind Sioux Falls Christian.
Ruth Dunham made a strong statement during the track season by running 4:48.94 for 1500m and 10:22.31 for 3000m, giving Pella another potential front-runner alongside Brenneman. Harlee Vande Voort and Carleigh Altwine bring additional championship experience, while Dana McCulla returns after running 19:40 last fall. The biggest question will be finding a fifth scorer capable of closing the gap, but with five runners returning from its state championship lineup, Pella remains a threat to defend its title and contend for an NXN berth.

No. 13 Flower Mound (Flower Mound, TX)
Analysis: Flower Mound returns five of its top seven from last year's team that won the UIL Class 6A state championship. The Jaguars also scored 71 points with an 18:08 team average to win NXR South before placing 9th at NXN. They will have to replace third runner Keira Primer and fifth runner Mckayla Kohutek, but return an elite low stick in Adeline Bennett, who ran 17:07 for 5K before posting track bests of 4:45.00 for 1600m and 2:13.49 for 800m.
Liana Cluley-Garza gives Flower Mound another proven front-runner after running 17:39 for 5K and 11:03.52 for 3200m. Eliana Rivera and Allie Driscoll return from the championship lineup, while Jewel Barnes could make a significant move after running 5:14.86 and 11:16.44 during the track season. With five runners back from an NXN top-10 team and several strong options competing to fill the two openings, Flower Mound has the talent and depth to defend both its state and regional championships.

No. 12 Harrisburg (Harrisburg, Sd)
Analysis: Harrisburg returns six of its top seven from last year's team that won the SDHSAA Class AA state championship and placed 6th at NXR Heartland. The Tigers feature one of the strongest young duos in the country in Brianna Reilly and Hannah Genrich, who both qualified for nationals individually last fall as an eighth grader and freshman. Reilly ran 16:45 for 5K before recording track bests of 4:42.87 for 1600m and 10:21.44 for two miles, while Genrich posted marks of 17:10, 4:59.61 and 10:31.57.
Behind its elite top two, Harrisburg will need continued development from its third through fifth runners to move into NXN contention. Eighth grader Eloise Scharnberg returns after running 18:34 last fall, while Autumn Gilhooly and Gracen Giegling both ran close to 5:30 for 1600m during the track season. With six runners returning from a state championship lineup, Harrisburg should be positioned to defend its Class AA title, but it will need a strong day from the back of its scoring five to challenge for an automatic berth at NXR Heartland.

No. 11 St. Francis (Sacramento, CA)
Analysis: St. Francis returns its entire top five from last year's team that finished as the CIF Division III runner-up to El Toro and placed 10th in the overall CIF State Meet Merge. The lineup is led by Alyssa Gutierrez, who ran 17:08 for 5K as a freshman before producing elite track marks of 4:53.30 for 1600m and 10:15.15 for 3200m.
Halle Welch gives St. Francis a second sub-5:00 runner, while Miya Menza and Sophia Kadel both broke 11:15 for 3200m during the track season. The returning depth extends beyond last year's scoring five, with Rebecca Dickson running 11:12.68 and Mia Holler posting an 11:06.94. With its complete scoring lineup back and multiple runners capable of moving up the order, St. Francis has the talent and depth to challenge El Toro for the Division III championship and climb significantly in the all-class merge where the top two teams earn a NXN birth.

No. 10 El Toro (Lake Forest, CA)
Analysis: El Toro returns its entire top seven from last year's team that won the CIF Division III state championship and placed 8th in the overall CIF State Meet Merge. Lilly Schroeder and Ava Crocker both return after running close to 18:00 for 5K and breaking 11:00 for two miles, while Crocker also dipped under five minutes with a 4:59.65 mile.
Gweneth Williams appears ready to take a major step forward after running 4:50.49 for the mile during the track season, giving El Toro an extremely strong top three. Samantha Danaher and Malena Pedrani return to complete the championship scoring five, while Sarah Foster and Sarah Ann Tok provide experienced depth. With all seven runners back and a stronger front of the lineup, El Toro will be favored to defend its Division III title and has an opportunity to climb higher in the CIF all-class merge.

No. 9 JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA)
Analysis: JSerra Catholic returns six of its top seven from last year's team that placed 3rd in the CIF All-Class State Meet Merge and earned an at-large selection to NXN, where it finished 21st. The Lions also scored 59 points to win the CIF Division IV state championship, finishing eight points ahead of Archie Williams. Sophomores Maya Pawlowicz and Brooklyn Tennant return after both breaking 17:50 for 5K and 10:47 for 3200m.
Reese Holley gives JSerra another elite runner after producing track bests of 4:45.23 for 1600m and 2:07.48 for 800m. Kaia Steadbeck, Hutton Nelligan and Hayden Kroger give the Lions six returning runners who broke 18:20 last fall, with all six also running 5:01.27 or faster during the track season. With one of California's deepest lineups and valuable experience from last year's national meet, JSerra will be favored to defend its Division IV title and has the potential to make a major jump at NXN.

No. 8 American Fork (American Fork, UT)
Analysis: American Fork returns six of its top seven from last year's team that scored 244 points to place 7th at NXN. After finishing 4th at NXR Southwest, the Cavemen earned an at-large selection and validated it by moving up nine places on the national stage. They will, however, be without Mae Glassford after the rising sophomore transferred to state and regional rival Lone Peak.
Skye Jensen leads the returning lineup after running 17:34 for 5K and 10:21.76 for 3200m. Cali Dooley broke 18:00 as a freshman, while Sarah Watson and Shay Smith ran 10:58.84 and 11:12.14 during the track season. Glassford's departure leaves an opening in the scoring five and makes the challenge against Lone Peak even more difficult, but American Fork still returns six experienced runners from a national top-10 team and has the depth to contend for another NXN berth.

No. 7 Niwot (Niwot, CO)
Analysis: Niwot finished just five points away from an NXN team championship last year, falling to Wayzata 142-147. The Cougars graduated three members of that lineup, including their top two national finishers in Addison Ritzenhein and Anna Prok. Niwot placed 3rd at NXR Southwest, finishing one point behind Heritage and earning an at-large selection, after beating Heritage by four points at the CHSAA Class 5A State Championships, 103-107.
Elise Hagen gives Niwot a proven runner capable of replacing some of those lost points after recording outstanding track marks of 4:47.52 for 1600m and 10:13.25 for 3200m. Tereza Koudelka owns the fastest returning 5K at 17:55, while Scarlett Parks ran 4:52.71 and 10:33.40 during the track season. Niwot also returns exceptional pack depth, with its top seven separated by only 29 seconds based on their 2025 5K bests. With three experienced seniors at the front and four sophomores behind them, the Cougars have the talent to defend their state title and reload into another national contender.

No. 6 Sehome (Bellingham, WA)
Analysis: Sehome returns its entire top seven from last year's team that won the WIAA Class 2A state championship and NXR Northwest title before placing 10th at NXN. The Mariners bring back an outstanding top four led by Sloane Clines and Kjirsten Ludeman, who ran 17:05 and 17:11 for 5K. Ludeman displayed elite speed during the track season with marks of 4:48.67 for 1600m and 2:06.64 for 800m, while Clines ran 10:41.01 for 3200m.
Lil Desler and Samantha Knipp give Sehome four returners who ran 17:39 or faster last fall, making the front of its lineup strong enough to compete with nearly any team in the country. The key will be reducing the gap to its fifth scorer, and Paige Ricks appears ready to do that after running 5:13.67 and 11:19.56 as a freshman. If Ricks carries that improvement into cross country, Sehome has the complete lineup needed to defend its state and regional titles while climbing well inside the top 10 at NXN.

No. 5 Ann Arbor Pioneer (Ann Arbor, MA)
Analysis: Ann Arbor Pioneer returns six of its top seven from last year's NXR Midwest championship team, graduating only fourth runner Hana Boggess. The lineup is led by defending NXN and Brooks XC Nationals individual champion Natasza Dudek, who ran 16:09 for 5K before recording track bests of 4:42.77 for the mile and 9:57.19 for two miles. Pioneer entered last year's national meet with a chance to contend for the team title but endured a difficult day and finished 18th.
Pioneer will have an opportunity for redemption behind its loaded top three of Dudek, Sienna Klemmer and Keira Von Blon. Klemmer and Von Blon both ran under 10:35 for two miles during the track season, while Laura Forsyth appears ready to make a major impact on the scoring lineup after improving to 5:04.44 and 11:05.45 as a freshman. If that track progress carries into cross country and the back of the lineup can close the gap, Pioneer has the front-end firepower to defend its regional title and contend for a national championship.

No. 4 Barrington (Barrington, IL)
Analysis: Barrington won the IHSA Class 3A state championship and placed 6th at NXR Midwest last year despite competing without top runner Mia Sirios, who suffered an injury at the beginning of the season. Sirios returned during the track season and showed that she is back at an elite level, running 4:45.24 for the mile and 9:44.16 for 3200m. She placed 2nd in the Brooks PR 3200m and earned a Golden Ticket to compete at Brooks XC Nationals this December.
Adding Sirios to a championship lineup gives Barrington one of the strongest top threes in the country. Victoria Tarara ran 10:19.75 for 3200m during the track season, while Angelica Hill posted marks of 4:59.76 and 10:33.86. Ashleigh Forbes also appears ready to move up the lineup after running 5:16.34 and 10:57.78 as a freshman. If Sirios remains healthy and the young group behind its top three continues developing, Barrington has the talent to defend its state championship and move into NXN qualifying contention.

No. 3 Buchanan (Clovis Beach, CA)
Analysis: Buchanan returns its top six from last year's team that finished first in the CIF All-Class State Meet Merge before placing 17th at NXN. The Bears bring back impressive depth throughout their lineup, with six runners who recorded 5K bests of 18:19 or faster. Molly Sundgren leads the returning group after running 17:33 for 5K and 10:34.68 for 3200m.
Brooklyn Buckley could provide the low stick Buchanan needs after making a jump forward during the track season with a 4:48.95 for 1600m after running 4:53 the year before. Layla Merancio, Aniston Welk and Noelle Frantz all broke 11:00 for 3200m, while Frantz also ran 5:00.89 as a freshman. Buchanan's strength from its first through sixth runners makes it difficult to beat in California, but climbing the national standings will depend on one or two athletes emerging near the front of elite races. With nearly its entire lineup returning, the Bears have the depth and track progression to make that jump.

No. 2 Lone Peak (Highland, UT)
Analysis: Lone Peak placed 4th at NXN last year with 178 points, finishing only four points behind Union Catholic for the final podium position. The Knights graduated their top two national finishers in Zoey Nilsson and Brielle Nilsson, but added American Fork transfer Mae Glassford after she ran 17:41 for 5K as a freshman. Lone Peak dominated a strong NXR Southwest field with 68 points and only a six-second spread from its first through fourth runners after winning the UHSAA Class 6A state championship over American Fork, 31-52.
Maya Bybee is positioned to lead the new-look lineup after running 17:28 for 5K and 10:17.00 for 3200m. Hailey Atwater could provide another major low score after making a massive jump from 5:05 to 4:46.43 for 1600m, while Glassford, Tatum Brewer and Paityn Rohatinsky give Lone Peak five returners at 18:04 or faster. Losing the Nilsson sisters leaves significant points to replace, but the addition of Glassford and Atwater's breakthrough keep Lone Peak in position to defend its state and regional titles while contending for another NXN podium finish.

No. 1 Union Catholic (Scotch Plains, NJ)
Analysis: Union Catholic returns six of its top seven from last year's team that won the NXR Northeast Regional and NJSIAA Meet of Champions before placing 3rd at NXN. The Vikings are led by Paige Sheppard, who has already translated her elite track speed to the cross country course with a 16:44 5K best. Sheppard followed that season by running 4:28.77 for 1600m and 2:00.65 for 800m.
Union Catholic's national championship ceiling could depend on how much of its middle-distance success carries over to cross country. Sophia Thompson ran 4:37.60 and 2:07.08 during the track season despite holding a 19:12 5K best, while Abigail Robisky adds another potential impact runner after clocking 2:05.24 for 800m as a freshman. Cayleigh Kaiser and Harper Telesca provide proven strength over longer distances, and Saffa Ellis ran 10:51.71 for 3200m. If Thompson and Robisky can convert their track speed into cross country success, Union Catholic has the talent to move from the NXN podium to championship contention.
