It doesn't matter if you're from California or Delaware or anywhere in between geographically or population-wise -- there's really nothing cooler as a high school athlete than competing at your state championship meet. For some, it's a final hurrah in the sport they've spent four or more years immersed in; for others, it's a springboard to collegiate competition; and for others still, it's a chance to write their names into the history books. Any way you slice it, state meets are awesome.
After reflecting on yet another fantastic season of postseason competition across all 50 states and Washington, D.C., we got curious about the paths athletes took to get there.
We're also in a uniquely qualified position to tell this story. Through our partnerships with state associations across the country, our work helping administer qualification and advancement systems, and our relationship with the NFHS, we've become intimately familiar with the many different ways states approach postseason track and field. From the massive enrollment numbers and layered qualification systems of states like California and Texas to smaller states with entirely different competitive structures, we've spent years working alongside the organizations responsible for getting athletes to the starting line at their biggest meet of the season.
So after scouring state athletic federation and coaching association websites, digging through buried PDF documents, and cross-referencing qualification procedures with the associations themselves, we're prepared to share with you a -- reasonably! -- accurate rundown of how high school track and field athletes qualify for state across the United States.
Special thanks to legendary Missouri coach Dean Hays who wrote MileSplit's first version of this article way back in 2012. 14 years later, qualification systems have changed, classifications have shifted, and new postseason formats have emerged across the country. We wanted to revisit and modernize that effort for today's high school track and field landscape. If you have any information you'd like to contribute for your state, correct something we got wrong, or archive results that made a huge impact in your state, please email them to alonso@flosports.tv. In many states, we have state meet results going back to the early 1900s!

Something Unique: Missouri uses the MSHSAA Championship Factor for private and charter schools rather than classifying them based on blanket enrollment numbers. Programs accumulate points based on postseason success over the previous six seasons and may move up one or two classifications if they consistently win at a high level. The system is applied on a sport-by-sport basis, meaning a school's track program could compete in a different classification than its basketball or soccer teams. To put it bluntly a really small school that has a ton of postseason success can wind up in the largest classification despite their enrollment numbers.
