A Deep Dive into the Data at the NCAA Championships
For years, we've covered the NCAA Championships the same way everyone else has: who won, who scored, who set records, and who left with a trophy.
This year, we wanted to try something different.
Using data from MileSplit and TFRRS we set out to answer a simple question: what does the NCAA Championship field actually look like?
Not just the performances that happened at the meet, but the athletes behind them.
Where did they come from? How many were international recruits? Which states produced the most qualifiers? Which athletes made the biggest jumps from high school to the NCAA Championships?
The result is the most comprehensive looks we've ever taken at a championship field.
Some findings confirmed what many people around the sport already believed. Others genuinely surprised us.
All the tables below are interactive and open up even more specifics about the data than is currently visible.
Where the NCAA Championships came from
Every athlete at the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships was traced back to a home state or country, then grouped by origin. Athletes who scored in an individual final were also scored 10·8·6·5·4·3·2·1 for places 1--8. Wheelchair and relay events excluded. This is the raw makeup of the championship field before scoring. The field included athletes from 45 states and 60 countries. Texas produced the most U.S. qualifiers with 61, nearly 60% more than California. Kenya led all international countries with 56 athletes, which was more than three times every other combined.

How the field was built every athlete is a HS recruit, a transfer from another college, or an international -- tap an event group
Every NCAA qualifier got here one of three ways: as a U.S. high school recruit, a transfer, or an international athlete. More than half of the full field came directly from the high school ranks, while transfers made up just 14%. The mix changes a lot by event group, especially in distance, where international athletes nearly matched U.S. high school recruits.
HS recruit = US athlete, no prior college program. Transfer = recorded a college mark for a different program before. International = no US high-school footprint. Multi-event athletes excluded.

Qualifiers tell one story. Points tell another. Texas led in both athletes and championship scoring, but North Carolina nearly matched California's point total with roughly half as many qualifiers. Louisiana also scored as many points as Ohio with less than a third of the athletes. Sort by the per-capita columns to see which states punch above their participation base.

This looks only at international athletes and scores them the same way as the NCAA finals. Kenya did not just have the largest group in the field; it was the clear scoring leader with 195 points. Nigeria and Jamaica were next, while a few countries were extremely efficient. Eritrea had one athlete and scored 20 points.

Here are the U.S. high schools that sent multiple athletes to the NCAA Championships, with points showing what those athletes did once they got there. IMG Academy led by volume, but schools like Scripps Ranch, The Classical Academy and Rockvale generated major NCAA points from only two athletes. However, the most interesting callout here definitely comes from Andale High School in Andale Kansas. A city with a population of 929 (about a third of your favorite shopping mall) and a school of 381 total students!

No Experience Needed only two NCAA qualifiers had no matched HS track mark and were not international athletes
Nearly every athlete at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships can be traced back to a high school track & field performance history. After removing international athletes and athletes with identifiable high school marks, only two qualifiers remained with no matched high school track & field performances anywhere in the MileSplit database.
Both appear to have reached the NCAA Championships from basketball backgrounds rather than traditional high school track pipelines. Obiora Okeke was involved in basketball and academic programs at California's Sato Academy of Mathematics and Science, while Kyriaun Davis played basketball at Independence High School in Bakersfield and later at Reedley College before qualifying for NCAAs in the discus.

This excludes athletes who simply changed events in college and athletes who were later identified as international or already had a high school track footprint. Cherono, Imogin and Hicks were removed from this list.
Overlooked out of high school modest high school performances transformed into Division 1 contenders
Recruiting is built on projection, but some NCAA qualifiers developed far beyond anything their high school marks suggested. This view compares an athlete's best known high school mark with the performance that got them to the NCAA Championships. The jumps are staggering: Tor Hortung-Davidsen qualified for NCAAs after running 3:55 for 1500m despite a high school best of just 4:46.04. Rachel Neaves added more than 80 feet to her hammer throw, while Ben Shughart improved nearly 85 feet in the javelin. Distance running produced some of the most dramatic examples, with athletes such as Nathan Davis, Ryker Holtzen, Luke Knepp, Rob McManus, William Carlton, Mateo Bianchi and Brian Boler turning modest high school marks into NCAA Championship appearances.
International firepower, by event share of the field that's international, and the share of points they scored -- tap a column to sort
International athletes are not spread evenly across the sport. This table compares the share of each event field that was international with the share of NCAA Championship points scored by those athletes. The largest gaps reveal where international competitors had the greatest impact. The men's 10,000m was the most striking example, with international athletes making up 79% of the field and scoring 100% of the points. The women's 5000m showed a similar pattern, accounting for 68% of the field but 97% of the scoring. At the other end of the spectrum, events such as the men's 1500m, men's 110m hurdles and women's pole vault remained largely driven by domestic athletes despite meaningful international representation.
