TENNESSEE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Karontae Cunningham only started running track in 2024. Before that he was a football player at Tyner Academy in Chattanooga, fast enough to draw a visit from the Tennessee Volunteers for football recruiting. Someone put him in spikes and pointed him at a track and what followed was one of the great sophomore seasons in Tennessee history.

REPLAY: TSSAA AAA OUTDOOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Tuesday at the TSSAA Class A State Championships at the University of Tennessee, Cunningham won the 100m in 10.15 (+1.7) - the second-fastest 100m in Tennessee state history. Then he came back and won the 200m in 21.03. Then the 400m in 48.20. Then he anchored Tyner's winning 4x200 relay. His four contributions helped Tyner win the Class A team title - the first in program history - edging Union City 93-88.

Claire Wetick of St. Agnes Academy in Memphis came into the state pole vault holding the Tennessee all-time record at 13-6. She matched it on her first attempt and then cleared 13-8 to reset it. She moves into a tie for US#5.
