Abigail Hennessy of Westford Academy, MA took a 4.5 second win in the Penn Relays High School girls Mile running a 4:38.13 pulling away from Maysen Fletcher (Herbert Hoover, WV) over the final 400m who took 2nd in 4:42.51.
In 2025, Hennessy took 2nd in a battle to the line against Dylan McElhinney (Hunter College Campus Schools, NY) in a thriller when McElhinney won in 4:39.89 to 4:40.01.
Hennessy is two weeks off from a 9:50.84 win in a loaded Arcadia field and had all the confidence in securing her first Penn Relays watch. She'd hold inside position from the start to get out front early moving up to the lead over the first 250m going through the first 409m in 1:10.23.
Fletcher would move up to second over the next 400m with Hennessy still setting the pace as they'd come through 809m in 1:11.78. It was time to crank up the pace as the field started to stretch out as Hennessy held the lead going into the bell at 3:31.41. Despite holding the lead most of the way, Hennessy was saving an extra gear closing in 1:06.73 pulling away from Fletcher, Anna Bockius (Padua Academy, DE) and Hannah Jicha (Strongsville, OH) to take the win off her 4:34.69 Mile PR from last years NB Outdoor Nationals also at Franklin Field.
