Charles Hicks, a 2019 graduate of The Bolles School in Jacksonville, ran 2:04:35 to place 7th overall at the Boston Marathon on Monday.
Hicks, a former FHSAA state champion, was right in the mix early, going through halfway in 1:01:55 while running with the lead group. He averaged 4:46 per mile across the full 26.2 miles and held steady over the final 10K to secure a top-10 finish against a deep international field.
His mark ranked second among American men in the race and firmly puts him in the conversation among the top marathoners in the world. Hicks finished ahead of established names like CJ Albertson, Galen Rupp, and Rory Linkletter.

The performance marks a major step forward for Hicks, who previously ran 2:09 while training on roughly 80 miles per week. His progression at the distance has been steady, and this result represents a significant breakthrough.
The British-born runner who grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, was one of the most decorated high school distance runners in state history at Bolles, earning All-American honors and previously holding the Florida state record in the 3200 meters at 8:49. He later went on to Stanford, where he won the NCAA Division I cross country title as a redshirt sophomore.
His 2:04:35 in Boston is the latest addition to that résumé, and one of his most impressive accomplishments yet.
