TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --- The No. 19 University of Portland earned their sixth consecutive berth in the Cross Country National Championship 10k race in 2010 after their fourth place finish at the West Regional Championship one week ago. For the second year in a row the Pilots came away with a 13th place team finish and were led by sophomore Trevor Dunbar who finished in 25th (30:21) on Monday at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
Dunbar earned his first cross country All-America honor with his 25th place finish. He gives the Pilots their ninth All-America honor on the men’s side during head coach Rob Conner’s 21-year tenure.
Dunbar was joined in the top 100 by junior Alfred Kipchumba (30:37 / 45th) and sophomore Lars Erik Malde (30:42 / 62nd). Rounding out the race for the Pilots were redshirt senior Peter Christmas (31:12 / 102nd), redshirt freshman Aaron Scott (32:07 / 197th), graduate student Craig Hopkins (32:32 / 215th), and redshirt junior Matt Frerker (33:10 / 231st).
Individual results for the purpose of team scoring are different than for All-America status due to the presence of individual qualifiers in the race. Individual qualifiers are subtracted from the standings when team score is tabulated.
Portland matched its sixth-best finish in school history. This marks the eighth time the program has placed among the top-15 and sixth consecutive year in the top-20. Over the last six years only five other schools can boast consecutive top-20 finishes (Stanford, Oklahoma State, Wisconsin, Colorado, and Iona).
UP’s best team finish at the National Championship is seventh, done in 2001 and 2007. The Pilots have never gone more than two straight years without an NCAA appearance.
Liberty senior Sam Chelanga won the individual title, while the Oklahoma State Cowboys won the team championship with 73 points. Rounding out the top five in team scoring was Florida State (193) in second, followed by Wisconsin (223), Stanford (237) and Oklahoma (281).
