NATIONAL RECORD! Katy Zang Runs 9:37.15 2-Mile At NBNI!

Just one week ago Katy Zang held a 3200m personal best of 10:17 heading into the OATCCC D1 Indoor State Meet as the top seed. She'd have a breakout performance of 9:42.84 in the 3200m to become the first Ohio high school girl ever to break 10-minutes.

Teays Valley senior and Indiana commit Katy Zang carried that momentum to not just a New Balance Nationals Indoor Championship title, but also a MEET RECORD and NATIONAL RECORD in 9:37.15.

This mark breaks Mary Cain's 9:38.68 from 2013, which was one of the longest-standing high school indoor records for the distance events.

Just like last week, Zang was not afraid to take it out from the gun and led all the way to the tape with a one mile split of 4:41, and 4:53.08 for the final 1600m.  The meet had pacelights set to Cain's National Record that she had a massive lead on early in the race, but was closing in her over the final mile little by little.  As she hit the bell it looked like the lights were going to catch her, but she had another gear to pick up the pace to close in 35.43 to break the National Record by about 1.6 second with an time of 9:37.15!

Cain's record was set at the New Balance Grand Prix in a pro field where she took third overall and had competition throughout the race.  Zang was solo from the gun breaking a record that many thought was untouchable.

It hasn't even been a full year since Zang set her now previous personal best of 10:47.04 at the 2025 New Balance Nationals Outdoor but since then, Zang has steadily found her way into the spotlight with not just the past two weeks, but also a 13th place-finish at NXR Midwest and then followed that up with a win at RunningLane XC Championships.
