Watch Brian Burns run 4:00.38 at Saucony Battle for Boston - Last Chance
National Boys Indoor Mile Rankings
--
The chase to be the first Mile under 4:00 for the 2026 track season has been on and Brian Burns made two attempts at the feat last week on Friday at the Arkansas Qualifier in his home state where he ran 4:01.44 where he took 2nd overall. He then travelled from Arkansas to Boston for the Saucony Battle for Boston Mile on Sunday where he placed 4th in his heat at 4:00.38 coming up just short of the barrier.
Burns came through 809m in 2:01.42 back in around 8th in his heat that was crowded with collegians and pro athletes. The pace would pick up for the field over the final 400m as Burns would fight to move up in the strung out single filled field. He'd come through 1209m up to 6th in the field at 3:01.33 as the top three in the heat had a small gap forming on the rest of the field.
He'd come through at the bell in 3:30.82 needing a 29.1 final 200m as he started positioning himself to move around guys in front of him. With a lot of jostling the last lap Burns would come up just short closing in 29.56 in 4:00.38. The mark moved him to US#2 on the season behind Caden Leonard's (TX) 4:00.07 last week at the ASICS Sound Invite. With less traffic in his way over the final 200m Burns could be returning back to Arkansas with a sub 4:00 mile under his belt.
Now with Leonard, Burns and Jameson Pifer (GA) all at 4:00 on the indoor season the sub 4 minute barrier won't be able to elude the the high school ranks for much longer as the indoor track season come to a close over the next few weeks!
