At the NCHSAA 1A State Track and Field Championships, Akala Garrett of Albemarle (NC) made history in the 300mH.

Garrett won the 1A title, broke the North Carolina all-time record and ran the seventh-fastest time in high school history with a 40.26. The previous record of 40.42 was held by Olympian Anna Cockrell. 

In the latest race breakdown, Garrett sat down with MileSplit's Olivia Ekpone to talk about the highlights of her record-breaking race, from the 'set position' in the starting blocks to the emotional finish.
