This may be a product of opportunity. Very few high school athletes in the modern era (the last five to eight years) have shown great interest in the decathlon.

Nixon broken the national record in 2011, becoming the only prep athlete to go over 8,000 points. 

But consider Kyle Garland. He was among a more recent crop of high school decathletes who excelled in the multis (alonside Ayden Owens and Yariel Soto), but he still only capped out at 7,562, which is fourth all-time in the phase. That's more than 5-percent shy of Nixon's top mark. 

Another fun fact? Current sprint stud Gatlin Bair, a high school junior from Burley, Idaho, transitioned off the multis as a sophomore and has since then developed into a 10.1 and 20.4 sprinter in the 100m and 200m. That's one such possibility that we won't see. 

The Bair's, however, won't go home empty-handed. Gatlin's brother, Jaxon, converted on the seventh-best multis performance in history in 2014, scoring 7,496 in 2021.
