Before we know it, the championship part of the season will be in full swing. We decided to take a closer dive into the top sophomores in the 3-mile race thus far.

Josiah Tostenson of Crater (OR) has left his mark this season by being the only sophomore boy to break 14-minutes. Tostenson ran through the finish line at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in 13:57.40 for a new personal best. His time puts him as the top underclassman and No. 6 on the national ranking list this season.

Along with Tostenson, there were three other boys from California who dipped under 14:30 in the 3-mile race. Landon Pretre of Menlo School (CA), Broen Holman of Sonora (CA) and Evan Noonan of Dana Hills (CA) are top sophomores in this event.

On the girls side, look no further than Sadie Engelhardt who clocked a 15:42.60 at the same meet as Tostenson. Engelhardt, who's No. 1 in the nation at this distance, ran the second-fastest all-time performance and is the only girl who broke through the 16-minute barrier this cross country season. Meanwhile, Engelhardt broke Katelyn Tuohy's sophomore class record of 15:55.30 back in 2017.

Brynn Garcia of JSerra Catholic (CA), Mountain View's (UT) Julie Moore, Elliana Lomeli of Buchanan (CA), and Tiffany Sax of Newbury Park (CA) ran faster than 16:30 this year.
