The summer of 2022 feels like the summer of change.
That's because on Wednesday, Illinois Athletic Director Josh Whitman announced the dismissal of Mike Turk, the team's long-time Director of track & field and cross country.
Turk, who had been with the Fighting Illini' since 2006, took over head coaching duties in 2010 as the interim coach before earning the role permanently in 2012. He found early success as Illinois' head coach, winning a Big Ten Conference (B1G) title in 2015.
However, since then Illinois has struggled to climb above the bottom-end of the results at the B1G Championships for both indoor track and outdoor track.
But with all departures come new opportunities. And a Director role at a Power Five school should be plenty appealing to a number of candidates. Illinois should expect a host of strong candidates to apply.
