The Scoop: Athletes Are Off To A Flying Start In 2021

* Larry Josh Edwards after his win at Spiked Shoe

- - -

Larry Josh Edwards dropped the second-fastest speed rating of the 2021 season on Friday at the Spiked Shoe Invitational in State College, Pennsylvania, winning the high school race in 15:04.70.

The next closest competitor was 48 seconds behind and scored a 174.

The performance, Edwards' first of the season, indicates just what kind of fitness the Oregon commit will bring to the table in the early going.

And it mirrors his performance from a year ago, when Edwards opened up with a 15-flat 5K to start his junior season.

But much more is expected of the MileSplit50 No. 3 ranked athlete this time around. The next pressing race for the University (WV) High School senior is an invitation at the Carlisle Invitational.

The high school girls race featured the debut of Carlisle (PA) junior Vanessa Alder -- a recent transfer from Pinecrest (NC) and a potential state championship contender.

Alder pocketed the win in 18:39.40
