Southlake Girls Off To Flying Start, Kevin Sanchez Notches Big Win

- - -

The Southlake Carroll girls, annually one of Texas' top teams, were off to a flying start on Saturday at their own meet, winning the own Southlake Carroll Invitational with an average of 18:19 and a total of 60 points.

In many ways, it set the standard for 2020 in girls cross country. The average is currently US No. 1 in the MileSplit database; the Dragons also earned a 117 speed rating average between its top five.

Perhaps it was a bit of a statement from the UIL Class 6A runner-ups from a season ago.

From senior Kaylie Cox, who was third in 17:35.57, to the team's fifth-runner, Sylvia Schwedler, who was 25th in 18:57.79, the performance was a beautifully balanced debut, featuring a compression of 82 seconds.

Colleyville Heritage's Gabbie Love won the overall race in 17:23.01, notching an impressive 135 speed rating, while Propser's Shewaye Johnson was second in 17:24.63 and earning an identical rating.

Austin Vandegrift's Kevin Sanchez, meanwhile, made quick work in the boys race, winning in a personal best time of 15:05.71.

The U.S. No. 2 time was the best performance of the weekend.

Better yet, it was an incredible performance from Sanchez, a junior who was a top 10 finisher at the UIL Class 6A State Cross Country Championships in 2020.

Wylie's Nathanael Berhane was second in 15:10.96, while Grapevine's Trey Leathers was third in 15:13.09.

Much like the girls race, the boys of Southlake Carroll earned the overall victory with 108 points, while Denton was second with 152 and Prosper was third with 199.
