* Marcus Reilly in the mile at the Grant Holloway Holiday Invitational
The Young Gun To Watch Out For
Sam Rodman, the defending 1,000m champion from 2020 who ran 2:28.49, is back, and here too is the nation's current US No. 1 in the 800m, Cole Piotrowski, who owns an indoor best of 1:54.89. There's also New Yorker Michael Rodriguez-King, who owns a US No. 1 in the 600m of 1:23.04.
But quite honestly, this could be a statement-making race for a freshman from Northbridge, Massachusetts.
Don't be undersold by by Marcus Reilly's performances right now: He owns a US No. 8 time of 1:26.15 in the 600m and a US No. 5 performance of 1:55.64 in the 800m.
But consider this: As an eighth-grader in 2020, he ran faster than anyone in this field in the mile, going 4:12.77 in November.
That is some serious power.
If he lives up to the billing, Reilly has a chance to break the freshman national class record of 2:21.9. The meet record of 2:24.64 was accomplished in 2018 by Josh Hoey.
