Over the last year, Scherer showed tremendous growth on the cross country course.
In 2019, Scherer finished seventh at the Division 1 WIAA State Championships and 21st at the Team Nationals Heartland Regional, finishing with a personal best time of 15:41on the Sioux Falls course.
But 2020 was a different year.
The Oshkosh North senior began his season with a sub-15 minute effort for 5K at the Desert Twilight XC Festival, placing second in an elite field with a time of 14:54.49.
He later placed ninth at the RunningLane National Cross Country Championships in a personal best of 14:40.21. This was equivalent to a 191 speed rating.
Within a year, Scherer lowered his personal best by 1:00.79.
