Appalachian State Cuts Men's Indoor Track & Field

Appalachian State is dropping men's indoor track and field, the latest program to make cuts to collegiate running programs since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

ASU also eliminated men's soccer and tennis, which reduces the university to 17 NCAA Division I sports (seven men, 10 women).

The school, which is part of the Sun Belt Conference, will continue to sponsor outdoor track and field and cross country.

App State is the third DI school in recent weeks to eliminate a men's track and field or cross country program, as previously Mid-American conference members Akron and Central Michigan cut cross country and track and field, respectively, earlier this month.

"After careful and thoughtful review, we determined that we could no longer sustain 20 program offerings in a fiscally responsible manner," Doug Gillin, Appalachian State's Director of Athletics said in a statement.

The school says that scholarships will remain for impacted athletes.

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, these cuts come as the school seeks to reduce its budget by $5 million for 2021.
