Kole Mathison of Carmel made a quick name for himself in just his first season for the Greyhounds, running a 15:32.70 5K at the Noblesville Regional back in October and finishing off the IHSAA season with an 11th place finish at the state cross country meet. He competed at both NXR and Foot Locker Regionals placing 22nd and 40th in the championship races respectively.

Even though the spring track season was cancelled, Mathison hasn't let that stop him from going out and still running fast times. In the three indoor meets he competed in, he threw down some very competitive times for a 15 year old, running a 2:02 800m, 4:27 full mile and a 9:31 3200m.

This morning, May 5th, Mathison set out to run a track 5K. Not only did he come out to run a fast 5K, he wanted to break the illusive 15 minute mark, something that has never been done by an Indiana freshman in cross country or track.

Mathison was paced by some friends along the way to finishing in 14:55 for 12.5 laps around the track totalling 5000 meters. If this had been an official race, Mathison would have set the IN No.2 all-time 5K run, sitting just behind Caleb Futter who ran a 14:28 at last years New Balance Nationals Outdoor Champs.

You can watch his full attempt at the mark below from his Instagram. Based on his Strava page, he averaged a 4:44 per mile pace along the way, with his fasted mile being the last at about a 4:42.
