Kansas MileSplit reporter Pat Melgares joined the throngs of spectators at the class 3A/5A/6A Kansas State Cross Country Championships who ran from point to point watching each race unfold.
Today, we'll take a look at how the race for the class 6A boys individual state title shaped up, through Pat's camera lens.
We'll look at other races in the days to come.
Lead Pack: After an even start, the lead pack emerges at about 3/4 mile into the race. Leading the early pack, left to right, are 2017 state champ Trent Cochran of Gardner-Edgerton, Shawnee MIssion North's Asher Molina, and Mill Valley's Matthew Turner.
Halfway Point: Just past 1 1/2 miles, Molina, Turner and Cochran have been joined by Manhattan's Daniel Harkin. Wichita North's Michael Iyali and Olathe North's Brian Beach are fighting their way back into the race.
Two miles: The race is getting very exciting with one mile to go. Molina leads Cochran, but the other four are right in stride with the leaders.
King's Bridge Hill: Molina makes the break and Harkin is the only one to respond. The pair roars uphill nearing Chester Cemetery. Just a little over one-half mile to the finish at this point.
Jim Ryun Skyline: Harkin makes his move, grabbing the lead for the first time with 400 meters to go. Molina responds. Lawrence Free-State's Ben Shryock and North's Iyali are still in the mix.
The Finish: Molina has a little more in the tank and he wins the state championship.
Runner-up: Harkin, a sophomore and now a four-time state medalist in track and cross country, is exhausted but fights his way to the second place finish.
