Summer Training Blog: Springville's Grant Gardner (Week 3)

Week 1

Monday 7/30/18

Today was the last day at Nike Elite camp. We did a workout led by coach Jerry Schumacher in the morning and then had a day full of super fun activities that ended at around 1 AM. So I'm kinda tired writing this. The workout was a 2-mile tempo on the track at about 5:05 pace, switching off leads with the other guys every 400. Then 1200, 800, 400, 150, 150. We did those at, 3:31, 2:14, and 60. Pretty chill workout, just to get the legs moving a bit. I felt super good. Especially running at sea level.

Flew back to Utah today and took a long nap when I got home. I wanted to go on my run right after that, but it was like 100 degrees outside, so I decided to run at night. The moon was nowhere to be seen, so it was way dark. Still went 6:10 pace though 'cause I felt good. Ran in the Zoom Flys for the first time and really liked them.

Wednesday 8/1/18

Did my run at about 3 PM to get used to the heat. Started slow, but ended the last six miles at just above six-minute pace. It is really tough to run when it's that hot, but I'm getting more used to it.

Thursday 8/2/18

Finally ran with the guys again. I haven't for about a week. It was nice and we took it pretty easy. Did some strides after. Nothing too fancy today.

Friday 8/3/18

Another nine miles! I've been kinda tired after that afternoon run on Wednesday, but I always feel good at the end of my runs, after I've warmed up a bit. I'm trying to get more hip and core strength this summer, so in general, I do abs every day and hip stuff on weight room days. This week has been different because of the camp and an interesting team schedule.

Saturday 8/4/18

Long run day! I woke up pretty early to get up to Deer Creek reservoir to run with my training group (some guys that graduated and are going to Utah State and BYU, and a current Utah State runner) so I just ran with Devin, Caleb, and Haydon up there. Running up there also helps my breathing 'cause it's been smoky down in the valley. I wanted to go 15 today, but my coach wanted to keep it a little easier, so I just went 12. The trail is a bit hilly, and dirt, so it made for a nice grind. I'm definitely getting better at pumping out those hilly runs.

Sunday 8/5/18

Rest day! Took it easy and slept in. Went to church and visited family. Very rejuvenating, especially since I wasn't able to last week.
