The Weekend Rundown: The Best Action From Around The Country

Rio Rico (Arizona) High junior Samantha Schadler had finished third at the Desert Twilight Festival a year ago, two places behind her All-American sister, Allie -- now at the University of Washington. 

Well, Friday was the time for the younger Schadler to step up ... and she certainly did. 

The multiple-state champion in Arizona who's looking for her first state Division 3 cross country title this fall -- and possibly a bid to NXN -- won the distinguished girls sweepstakes race in a career best 17:15.80, out-legging second-place Haley Wolf of Desert Vista (Arizona), who clocked a 17:21.60 career best 17:15.80, out-legging second-place Haley Wolf of Desert Vista (Arizona), who clocked a 17:21.60.

Air Academy (Colorado) sophomore Tatum Miller was third in 17:44.80, while Chandler (Arizona) junior Morgan Foster ws fourth in 17:44.80. Eight girls crossed the finish in under 18 minutes. 

Chandler High won the team competition with 110 points, averaging a 18:49 between its five scorers.

In the boys race, Kirtland Central (New Mexico) junior Kashon Harrison threw down a filthy time of 14:48, just edging Valor Christian (Colorado) sophomore Cole Sprout by mere a hundredth of a second to take the win in the boys sweepstakes race. 

Silver Creek (Colorado) High senior Brock Dykema posted a U.S. top 20 time to take third in 15:05.00, just two seconds of a mad finish for fourth between senior teammate James Lee, El Paso (Texas) sophomore Michael Abeyta, and Cibola (Arizona) senior Thomas Cain. 

The trio all finished identically in 15:07.00. 

The Desert Vista boys captured the team title with 101 points, posting its top three at 15-16-18 while its four and five were at 23-29 across a 15:24 average. Impressively, the Vista boys compiled an 18-second spread.
