The Weekend Rundown: Big Names Shine Bright At Roy Griak Invitational

Big Names Shine Bright At Roy Griak Invitational

There wasn't a dull moment at the Roy Griak Invitational, and the boys team battle was one for the record books between Great Oak (CA) boys, ranked No. 2 in the Flo50 boys rankings, and Wayzata (MN) boys, ranked No. 4.

Great Oak pushed to the front early and took control while Wayzata packed up and ran together through 2K. When the 3K mark hit, the lead pack started to form. From there on out, it was pushing through the heat to the end to see who could hold on.

In the end, it was Great Oak boys who came out with the win, scoring 50 points to Wayzata's 75.

Great Oak would finish 2, 4, 6, 13, and 21 with a 16:41 and a 33-second 1-5 split

The individual battle on the boys side was won in upset fashion by West Central (South Dakota) High's Derick Peters, ranked No. 25 nationally. Peters put down a surge after the 1K mark and never looked back. He pulled off the upset over Khalid Hussein of Wayzata who finished 10th but was ranked Flo50 No 21

The girls race was also extremely exciting as a group of three girls -- Grace Ping (MN)Anna Fenske (MN), and Emily Covert (MN) -- took it out from the gun.

The three battled all the way through 3K. At the 3K mark, Covert started to pull away from Fenske and Ping. After 3K Covert continued to hammer away at the pace. She opened the gap all the way to the finish, where she would pull off the upset win by running 18:11:20.

The team battle was intense as we got to witness No. 5 Great Oak, No. 10 Naperville North, No. 13 Edina, and No. 15 Wayzata face. In the end, it was the Naperville North girls who would come away with the win pulling off a three-point upset, 150 to 153 over the Great Oak girls.

Naperville North took the win by finishing 4, 9, 19, 58, and 60 with a 19:50 average and a 2:01-second 1-5 split. The Great Oak girls were just off that mark, finishing 6, 17, 20, 44, and 66 with a 19:55 average and 1:56-second 1-5 split. Wayzata would finish third by scoring 177 points while No. 13 Edina would finish all the way back in eighth place, scoring 249 points.
