Krianne McBride needed a sub-90-second final lap to claim the national record in the girls 3000m at the AAU Junior Olymic Games early Monday morning in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
But that was no sweat for the 12-year-old from Elgin, Texas.
McBride threw down a killer last lap to surpass the old record by six seconds, finishing in a winning time of 10:11.30. She stamped her name into the record books for the first time, passing Tatum Castillo, who last set the record in 2013 with a time of 10:17.00.
McBride said she didn't have any nerves beforehand.
"I was thinking that it was going to be a good and hard race," she said.
McBride, however, was running by herself by the final two laps. She finished in front of Texas Thunder Track and Field teammate Isabel Conde Frankenberg by 49 seconds.
McBride will follow later in the day by running in a semifinal heat of the 800m. It's a race in which she hopes to run a 2:16. Later in the week she'll also compete in the 1500m, and she hopes to push to a time of 4:30. The latter, mind you, would be another national record.
McBride says she's inspired by those around her.
"My parents and my coaches, they are very inspiring and cheerful," she said.
But she kind of just fell into the sport, she said.
"I felt bored and I needed something to do."
Are more titles in the future for McBride?
"Yes!" she said.
