Sean Burrell Sets 400m 15-Year-Olds Age Class Record at Great Southwest

The future is bright for American quarter-milers.

Recently, Fred Kerley set the collegiate record with a world-leading time of 43.70 seconds. On the high school scene, Tyrese Cooper has been destroying records left and right including his new freshman class record of 45.23 last year. While Cooper remains atop the national leaderboard, another name has emerged in Sean Burrell.

A freshman at Zachary High School in Louisiana, Burrell won the 400m at the LHSAA State Championships on May 6th in a blistering 46.29.

This past weekend, Burrell continued to write his name in the record books. With a clocking of 46.19 to take second place at the Great Southwest Classic behind Cooper, Burrell broke the 15-year-olds national class record.

The previous best was 46.23 set by T.C. Williams (Va.) High's Josephus Lyles in 2014 -- before he turned pro alongside his brother, Noah.

Burrell's time is also the third fastest amongst freshmen only behind Cooper and Obea Moore.

Burrell capped off his weekend running an All-Star 4x400 alongside Cooper, Jamal Walton, and Thomas Burns. The quartet posted insane time of 3:03.35.

Needless to say, high school track and field fans are in for something special with these two young athletes.
